Installed Xebian 1.1.4, Now I Can't Upgrade Anything?
« on: April 08, 2009, 02:13:00 PM »

Hi,

I had this problem too and it is because Debian have moved the packages for sarge to another site (Archive).

I have written a new /etc/apt/sources.list that fixes this. Simply remove the current entries from /etc/apt/sources.list and replace them with this...

deb http://archive.debian.org/debian sarge main contrib non-free

deb http://archive.debia...g/debian-non-US oldstable/non-US main contrib non-free
deb-src http://archive.debia...g/debian-non-US oldstable/non-US main contrib non-free

deb http://archive.debia...debian-security sarge/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://archive.debia...debian-security sarge/updates main contrib non-free

Awesome!  Thank you so much!  I did that and the upgrade worked like a charm.  As a followup, have you tried upgrading to a newer Debian release (i.e. apt-get -u dist-upgrade)?  Also, have you tried building/installing a 2.6.x kernel?

Hi,

I'm glad the new sources.list did the trick,

No I haven't tried upgrading debian or compiling a 2.6 kernel as I have been busy downloading the source for any applications I wanted and have been compiling everything i need as I go along.

I use Xebian basic (without X-Windows) 1.1.4 as I use it as a headless server running NAS type services such as FTP, Samba, Media Server and other applications.

It all worked a treat until I managed to break the installation a few moments ago (whoops!) by modifying the /etc/modules file and the linuxboot.cfg because I wanted to enable advanced power management as neither apm or acpi are enabled by default and I wanted to use apm to suspend the system on demand. I'll have to use the xebian boot cd to reverse my changes. I obviously need to learn more before I start messing about with kernel modules. :-)

As you can tell, I am no linux guru, I just continually experiment with stuff until it breaks. It's the only way I learn about an OS. :-)

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with kernel 2.6 compiling on the xbox.

There are instructions on building/installing a 2.6.x kernel here:

http://www.xbox-linu...nel-2.6-Upgrade

I couldn't get these to work though; when it came time to boot the new kernel, the whole XBOX would just freeze.  That was before I started using the right repositories though (thanks again!), so maybe now with all the updated packages on my system it would work.  I might give it another shot if I'm having a high-confidence day...
