New Xdsl 0.7
« on: April 23, 2008, 07:36:00 AM »

Hi,
I know xdsl0.6 is still in beta but I thought I'd also have a go at porting the new DSL4.2.5 to the xbox.
So here is the result so far.

Download below

XDSL0.7.0.0alpha

I you would like to test it out please give it a spin.

Most stuff I can think of is already working.

Please post bugs here.

PS. I've also posted a new up to date version of xdsl0.6beta, on the "xdsl back from the grave" thread.

wow, really nice to see, that your keep on the work for the xbox. maybe you can directly change to 4.3, which is out now. with build in firefox 2.x. mhhh.

one thing i noticed in the 0.6.x version. when i installed loopback, i had to move some files from the root-partition to KNOPPIX to get it starting. but then i must type a root password. but i have no keyboard (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) can you make an auto-login oder a standard-password for this, that i can submit with my gamepad?

Hi,
hopefully all this stuff is fixed. Just choose autologin when you see it pop up in the install script.

ok....
did you burn a disk or ftp? does xdsl_0.5 work for you? Usually if this happens, theres a typo in the linuxboot.cfg.

Has anyone else got this problem?

Works well, thanks biggrin.gif
Only things I noticed:
* my TV's resolution is 640x480, but even choosing this resolution, the picture doesn't fully fit. I think it's not a problem with your build only.
* I couldn't find a way to install the JRE Java VM. IT seems the UCI list is empty.
* I couldn't figure out how to setup a static IP and speed up boot time by getting rid of DHCP on startup.

But then again, it works!

Thanks stevewal, the best release for XBOX.

Im testing it:

At this time all seems perfect, I'm using 720p, and sound works great too.

I'm going to compile some stuff.

Well, this was written in xdsl 0.7, the perfect distro.

hi,

@Kick In Da Door: I'm sure there's a problem with ur linuboot.cfg. I'ts not being read by the loader. See if you can see it in unleashx editor. Try burning xdsl to a cd for a fullproof method.

@cricri_pingouin: Thanks.
Try xbox1.6 screenfix for screen size.
You need mydsl -> system -> JRE1_5_0 for java
the uci isn't empty, it just runs slow when the severs are overloaded. It usually appears eventually.

@willows02: Thanks.
If you want to compile something for me try unionfs. I really need someone with a good knowledge of custom compiling and patching of kernel modules to get this one working. But thanks for the feedback anyway.

I can't find either of those anywhere in the right click contextual menu (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I checked control panel, system, etc, to no avail. "Syustem" is empty as well, does it need time to load like UCI? Or are those build in and should load instantly?

Note that I don't boot from a CD: I extracted the ISO with UltraISO, FTP all the files to my F drive, and launch default.xbe. I've got a feeling that my XBox is not getting an IP properly since I normally use a static IP.

On shutdown, I get "www.ibiblio.org: host name lookup failure", which tends to confirm that I don't have a proper DNS, and I think that's probably because I disabled DHCP on the router, but can't figure out how to setup a static IP.

But more importantly, Taipei works  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Sorry for my lack of experience, I did use Linux a bit, but it was Debian, which looks and feels quite different (albeit I thought DSL was based on Debian).

I don't think xromwell (which all xbox linux use to boot - including xdsl) can boot from an usb stick.

@cricri_pingouin

look in right click menu - xdsl upgrades - xbox1.6 screenfix.

look in mydsl desktop icon - click the packet icon - then click system from the pannel, for java.

to setup static ip: click toolbar controll pannel - then netcard config. To set as permanent, you need to write the settings in /opt/bootlocal.sh.  You'll find what to write from the web, it's easy enough to find.

@Kick In Da Door. Just install unleashx, and use it to  edit your linuxboot.cfg. It has to be identicle to the one mentioned in the ftp readme. If anything is spelled incorrectly then xdsl wont load. I had the same problem as you once, and it took me half an hour to realise I has written "KNOPPX" instead of "KNOPPIX"  lol

cheers,
steve.
