Couple Questions About Running Linux On The Xbox
« on: April 15, 2008, 09:53:00 AM »

Alright so I've been doing some reading up on Linux for the xbox, I think I'm going to try it out. Just have a couple questions before I do this.

What Distro should I use? I was thinking XDSL it seems to be the most liked. What I plan on doing is just setting up my xbox as a server that I can remote desktop to and use to manage torrents/newsgroups. And maybe even setup an ftp. I've also seen a little bit of info on xUbuntu, anyone have any comments on that? yay or nay?

Also for installing I haven't been able to find a good tutorial on it? I just found some iso's to download. If I extract the iso and take the files and put it in my dashboard folder (currently set to xbmc) will that install it? or is there some steps I need to do. (I'm hoping its the same process as xbmc)

I think thats everything for now, if someone could answer that for me it would be greatly appreciated (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

hi, most of the xbox linux distro's once burnt to cd, will have some install options built in. i have to say that most people prefer xdsl as it is the speediest distro, you can install it natively which will format the entire drive and your xbox will become a linux box.

alright so I assume if I do that, if I backup my hard drive from my xbox before installing that, if I do decide I want to go back I can just ftp all the files back over?

Also my xbox is softmodded, it shouldn't make a difference should it?

im afraid i dont know much about softmods, but i dont think you can do a native install on a softmodded box, i might be wrong. you can do a loopback install on a softmod but im not sure how big you can make the install, if your planning on using it as a server im guessing youd want a big partition

(XDSL) native installs to F, and F isnt needed for a softmod, a softmod (usually) boots from C and E.
My softmodded xdsl native xbox still reboots to UnleashX. I hold down the white button on boot to launch Xromwell (UnleashX shortcut)

but native erases F, making it only good for linux.

you can do a loopback  (with a size limit of 2 gigs) on E or F and not lose ANY data.

XDSL comes with everything you want at the click of a button... ftp server, remote desktop, media players.
not saying the others dont, I just only know XDSL.

okay I looked into the loopback install, will it only allow me to access 2gb of my HD? I've got an 80gb HD so I would like to use it all if needed. I wouldn't mind doing the native install but I would like the option to go back with XBMC possibly in the future. Also with the loopback can I set it so that it boots automatically?

if you read the post before yours reefed is saying, you can do a native install on a softmodded box, if you had xbmc as your dashboard, it would first boot xbms then you could choose to boot linux. and im guessing if you backed up your f drive you could just ftp it back after reformatting your f drive.
