What Benifits Do I Get Doing A Loopback?
« on: January 02, 2008, 12:28:00 PM »

I have recently installed Linux.xbe to my apps and the Knopix and the other files to E partition. So my
queston is what benifits will a loopback instal and swapfile with a frugal install help with. It wasnt covered in the
pinned totrial, but someone on the emulator forums covered how to do it:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=480673
How To Get Epsxe Working On The Xbox Using Xdsl - Scenyx Entertainment Community
This is the part I was wondering about:
"This tutorial will be written under the basis that you have never used XDSL or linux before. if you have feel free to scroll down to the sections that you need to.

First things first...You will need to download the latest XDSL which can be found here (xdsl-0.5.zip). Inside the zip is an iso. Make sure you have the latest version of winrar...this will allow you to open the iso and extract it's contents (saving you from having to waste a cdr).

Now FTP into your xbox and do the following:

extract the KNOPPIX folder from the iso onto drive E of your Xbox. IT MUST BE PLACED IN E:...NOT E:/apps or such. E:/Knoppix is how the program has to see it for it to work. now then...open the KNOPPIX folder you just created on E and drag minirt24.gz and linux 24 into it. Now go into your Apps folder and create a folder called Linux and drag the default.xbe from the iso into this. Ok...almost done setting up dsl to install....last step is to make a text file and paste this into it:

title XDSL
kernel KNOPPIX/linux24
initrd KNOPPIX/minirt24.gz
append root=/dev/ram0 init=/etc/init rw video=xbox:640x480 frugal quiet kbd-reset

and then rename the text file as linuxboot.cfg. FTP that DIRECTLY into your E directory."

Is this the correct way to do it? How does it improve the way Linux works?

Hi,
That is the correct way to install a frugal install. If you want to get programs like espx working then it is best to do a loopback install so you can boot up quicker as all the changes you make are automatic like a normal operating system. You can do a loopback install from a frugal install or from the live cd. The swapfile means you can do more things at once (same as virtual memory on windows).

Personally I have found the xport pcs xbox is quicker at running psx games than the linux ps1 emulators under xdsl, so I would try that first.

haha yea linux can be a little confusing if your used to using windows. SImplest way to understand it is to get ur brain romoved and have it put back in the other way up. lol.

I now use linux so much that sometimes I look at a windows pc and my mind goes blank. I think your doing the right thing by trying to understand linux from scratch.

Firefox is included in xdsl and I would stick with that version for now untill you've figured out how to use linux and dsl linux better. I you want firefox 2.0 then you can do what master refeed said, but you also need to install gtk2.dsl from the mydsl gtk2 repository, then you need to click on gtk2 from the right click mydsl menu. But to be honest theres a diferent version of firefox 2.0 now in the dsl repository but kneeds a bit more patience to set up (I'll walk you through it if you really want).

As for skype, I'll look into that for you. brb.

Ok, If you click on the mydsl icon on  the desktop then click the net button, (don't use the scroller), you will find 3 different versions of skype there. I installed the most recient one, and it worked ok as far as I could tell, but I did'nt have a headset to test it with. It will automatically load a desktop icon, whick doesnt work. Just right click on the icon, click properties and replce the comand path with     /opt/skype-1.2.0.18/skype    Then it should work fine.

Thanks for all the help, I have not got the Skype button to work, but oh well.
I think I did it wrong. I erased every thing on that line and just put in what you told me to.
