FTP Install

If you don't wish burn XDSL onto a cd and have the ability to ftp to you Xbox, it is possible to simply copy across the required files. Create a directory E:\KNOPPIX on your Xbox. Extract linux24, minirt24.gz and the KNOPPIX file (found in the KNOPPIX subdirectory) from the iso and copy them into this directory. You should be left with the following files:

E:\KNOPPIX\KNOPPIX
E:\KNOPPIX\linux24
E:\KNOPPIX\minirt24.gz

Missing image

Caution

There should be no subdirectories in E:\KNOPPIX. The filenames are case sensitive.

Now create a file E:\linuxboot.cfg with the following content:

title XDSL
kernel KNOPPIX/linux24
initrd KNOPPIX/minirt24.gz
append root=/dev/ram0 init=/etc/init rw video=xbox:640x480 frugal quiet kbd-reset

Finally if you are not using the Cromwell BIOS copy default.xbe somewhere where you can run it from your Xbox. Then run Cromwell/default.xbe to boot XDSL. If you then want to peform a loopback/native install simply select your desired option in the Apps, Tools menu.

to joe...
try copying linux24 and minirt24 to the root of E as well, but NOT the default.xbe, as that will overwrite your dashboard file.

For those trying a loop back install..

How big did you make your loopback partition?

was the XDSLFS created where you wanted it?

I'm sorry guys i'm finding myself with less and less time to work on this project.. I just got a promotion at work and will be starting a new job.. Because i work nightshift and attend class during the day i doubt i will have time until winter break.

Perhaps i can zip my VMware HDD and give it out it has everything on there needed to remaster/remake and upgrade DSL as well as fix the current DSL.. I can also place a detailed how to in hopes someone could pickup this project or help fix everything..

thanks for the work you've done so far Keo.
might be a good idea to release all your files like you said. Personally I don't know how far I would get as my linux use is pretty average, but hopefully someone with a bit more linux knowledge would take up the challenge and carry on your good work.

Cheers,
Steve.

I tried a few sizes, 2 gigs,1 gig, and the default 200 megs, and they all seem to work, until you reboot.

yes the xdslfs was created on E, its all this xbox has, so twas the only option... I too am pressed for time(kids,wife,work,games,etc...) and will try on an xbox with a bigger HDD soon.

no need to be sorry -Keo.. you have done ALOT for xbox-linux, and it will still be here when you have time to stop in and doodle... until then, the older XDSL versions are more than suffice. THX for all your work and dedication. Good luck with your new job!

no news so far. I think keo has given up on this one. But most of it is done.

I've been trying to do some work on it myself but don't know enough to solve any of the problems. for anyone who wants to try to fix any of the problems as far as I can see these are the main ones at the moment:-

             1)  loopback install script does not work for this version. However native script works fine.

              2) 720p vidio setting does not work properly. Howverver the other video settings work fine.

             3) in native, mount hard drive partitions does not work. However frugal works fine.

             4) unc apps don't work.

I'm sure these problems could easily be solved by someone with a good knowledge of linux, but so far no luck myself.

cheers,
Steve.

hi,
the virtual keyboard and the drivers for the xbox pad have not been installed in this version yet. to get it to work you would have to find the files you need in xdsl 0.5 and transfere them accross.

Cheers,
Steve.

ok I've been doing some work on this. I'm definately no expert, but I've been digging around to find what files still need to be transfered over to make more things work.
New things working:

      xpad and onscreen keyboard working.
Some app windows resised so they fit on the screen better, eg emelfm and xpaint.
Install scripts are now in the fluxbox menu.
Mount hard drive partitions now work in native.
It should also boot now from the live cd (but I haven't tested it out yet).

things that used to work, but I've messed up lol:

The desktop stats on the top right of the screen no longer load. oops

Does anyone want to help me with this?

Cheers,
Steve.

ok the system stats (torsmo sytem manager) now works. Nothing to do with me, it only shows when it detects a swap partition, otherwise it gives some floating point error . I just created a swap and it flashed up as normal. phew.

Now to figure out this loopback problem:-   hmm.
