Hey Keo,
Any more news. U've gone a bit quiet lately. I forgot to mention that I've also got a usb keboard and mouse and an xbox vga adapter if you need me for testing.
Good luck,
Cheers,
steve.

It's uploaded and PM's have been sent.

Please do not give out the location of the beta.. You may burn it give it out freely.. Even upload it and rehost and give it out..

X-DSL.ORG has been hosted here on XS for 2 years now.. I want to thank them for hosting me all this time.. And i don't want to over use their bandwidth.. There is much work to do on the beta.. But play around with it..

Hi,
I've been running the the new dist frugal so far. Nice work keo. Most stuff working as it should. Just a couple of bugs to report so far. DOn't know why but I could'nt get the boot disc to work either, But it works fine if you transfere the files off the disc onto the xbox hard drive and boot in frugal mode. (@ zed2323: follow the ftp install method, but transfere from the disc insted of the pc).

I've used it 480p and 720p so far. 420p works great. 720p comes up like a negative image with all the colors wrong. Don't know why this is but I'm sure there is a simple explaination. I'm gonna look into it.

Cheers,
Steve.

Just got it! extracting the iso now... I guess my halo 3  rank can share a little of my time off work... cause xdsl has done ALOT more for me than Halo ever has. lol

Keo says i can distribute freely, so anyone wanting it, PM me and I can send it.

Steve said he is running frugally, so I will do a loopback.

I will report what I can.

Thank you -Keo for including me.

Well, no more "loopback as an option" so Im running frugally( just ftp'd over and ran).

Same as previous versions I have to boot, then plug in my mouse, or the bood loader fails (nothing to do with the distro, I'm sure this is in the bootloader) but no biggie works when I plug it in after booted.

no swapfile, the only option I have found is to create dos swapfile, and obviously there is no dos filesystem.

grub...lilo... I know this is what the real dsl offers now, and I have no clue... but until I figure out how to make a loopback... I guess all options are off for me.

no java, cause the file you have to download is 50 megs, which is more than the Ramdisks limitation. so no yahoo chess sad.gif

but I know there is a way to create a .ext filesystem within a file (uhh loopback?) so I'm searching these boards because Ive done it before.

the swapfile is what is going to hold me up... but I'm just going to try and copy a swapfile over from a previous version os xdsl and see if it picks it up.

other than these few setbacks for me, looks great keo!

hmm, I'm at the same stage. I tryed to install on hda1 which is native F patition from a previous xdsl install. It appeared to install ok, but when I booted the previous install booted.

so I'm thinking we need the the xbox install script from the last knoppix version. Shame I screwed up the memory from a failed ram upgrade, so I've only got about 30 mins before the ram starts to fail. blink.gif

lol the xbox I installed to dont have an F. but I can make a .ext filesystem.iso then mount it, and it'll be a partition I can install to.

http://forums.xbox-s...ight=4 gig xdsl

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=520238

this is how I'm going to create the filesystem... damn Halo 2 wont leave me alone though.   tongue.gif

I still havent tried copying over my swap file but I think that has a good chance of working too. (hopefully)

I think after I deal with these two issues all will be good.

in case anyone is wondering, I'm running pblmetoo on an old xbox. (I'll have to look up the version #)

*edit  I just copied over a swap from a previous version of XDSL  "knoppix.swp" and it seemed to pick it up fine....  wierd though, now the slit showed up, it hadnt been there before....COOL!

Still having a few problems here. Can't figure out how to get 720p to work properly or how to install onto an existing ext partition. How did you get on Master Reefed? Now I'm trying to get some unc apps to mount with no avail.

Anyone got this stuff working? Could use some help.
Cheers,
Steve.

720 cant help ya with...as I'm on a normal old fashioned TV (with a great picture lol).

And I havn't "got on" yet, been busy, but I dont think it will too long, I'm going to try to use the commands in the above links to create a .ext partition, by creating a filesystem in a file, then mounting the file (.iso) and...viola! new .ext partition. lol... Then I'll have a look at my old loopback linuxboot.cfg and make the correct modifications to the new one to point to my new Filesystem.

Basicly I'm going to try and manually do a loopback install. I hope that this new version uses the "newer" busybox so XDSL can now support a file bigger than 2 gigs.

I dunno, I'll let ya know if it works. lol

told ya'll I wasnt too "nix savvy"... but I'm not afraid to learn.   biggrin.gif

For those trying to loop back installs? Are you trying to run this from the menu.. Please don't do that.. I should have posted this.. Reason is because i never changed that path to the XDSL install scripts..

You can run these scripts manually..

/usr/sbin/xbox-frugalinstall
/usr/sbin/xbox-nativeinstall
/usr/sbin/xbox-loopbackinstall

If you want to build a swap file use this script

/usr/sbin/xbox-mkpartitions

I'm not sure why XDSL won't boot from the xbox.. Let me ask you this does it boot from your PC?

As for the newer busybox not sure.. But i know fatx can only support 4 gig's this is the MAX you can use for this type of install..

I once had an idea to turn the Z drive into a swap drive.. I think we ran in to problems with fatx you can put your swap block file there.. I might try to get that working.. Would be neat at least..

Reefer.. If you can host this somewhere.. You can even post the link in this forum.. I don't care.. Just don't wanna kill Xbox-Scene bandwidth.

Sorry fellas, had to work yesterday, then came home and played my 360 till I passed out.   biggrin.gif

thx Chronic for finding a place to host it.
and thx -keo for the scripts, I'm gonna go do a loopback right now, then I can really play with this thing!

Personally I see no Reason at all to NOT release it to everyone that wants it.

"cannot find loopback filesystem
please reset your xbox"

this what I get when trying that script, all seems to go well, until I reboot, then I get this.

here is what is added to my linuxboot.cfg after running the script /usr/sbin/xbox-loopbackinstall

title XDSL Loopback install
kernel KNOPPIX/linux24
initrd KNOPPIX/ird-loop.gz
append root=/dev/ram0 init=/etc/init rw video=xbox:640x480 rootfs_name=xdslfs quiet kbd-reset

linux24 and ird-loop.gz are where they should be (in the knoppix folder)I tried copying them to E to no avail.

is it something easy I'm missing?

I also tried using an old .cfg that had the same results

title XDSL Loopback install
kernel KNOPPIX/linux24
initrd KNOPPIX/ird-loop.gz
append root=/dev/ram0 init=/etc/init rw video=xbox:640x480 quiet kbd-reset
