Youtube Firefox Flash Player
« on: May 28, 2007, 07:11:00 PM »

hi guys, im pretty new with browsing the web on my xbox and putting linux on there...Ive put xdsl on a disk and its great to show off to my friends with but I would like to go onto youtube in firefox (or anything else) and watch the videos on my xbox..ive used the seach button and from what i understand its possible to install flash but no sound? just wanted some confirmation really thats as good as it gets with reagards to installing flash.  I know xbmc has a youtube browser built in but that seems to freeze alot when I click videos and I have to restart it.
so my questions are:
am I using the best OS for what I want to do?
is there a way to make sites like youtube work?
is firefox the best browser for xbox?

cheers

Quick Answers

Q. am I using the best OS for what I want to do?
A. Yes, I think that XDSL is the most popular and best and easiest to use, also faster.

Q.is there a way to make sites like youtube work?
A. Yes

Q.is firefox the best browser for xbox?
A. I believe so, I haven't heard too much about any other browser

I want to use youtube also. I installed items from "MYDSL" (it's an icon on the xdsl desktop). Under GTK2, I first installed GTK2, then the firefox inside GTK2 (MYDSL/GTK2/firefox...), then I installed java under systems (but I don't think you need java, I'm not sure). I beleive the firefox under GTK2 has flash player inside of it, so when I went to browse the web I got to see youtube videos, but the problem was that the firefox seemed to randomly close on me ever since I installed the firefox under GTK2. So you can try it out, but just incase it doesn't work you might want to reinstall XDSL.

ps. I still don't know how to figure out the sound.

the best/easiest way for you to view youtube, is to get the youtube script for XBMC.

if you want fast, stable, and small... then stick with xdsl.

if you want sound, try gentoox

Hi,
There is 3 ways to do this:-

1) The best way is to get alsa working. Personally I've not suceeded with this but it is possible if you know enough about linux.

2) Use firefox 2.0 with the (mydsl) testing version of mplayer plugin, then get the grease monkey addon and a greasmonkey youtube mplayer script. I'm using a slightly modified version of anyplayeryoutube. If you need help with this then you can pm me.

3) get wine from the dsl repository and load the windows version of opera (without java) and load flashplayer 9 for windows. This seems to work ok but the youtube video's can be pretty jerky before they are completely downloaded. For some reason that I can't find the answer to, they seem to play back much smoother if I right click on the screen when the vids are playing in youtube to bring up the flash player menu.

cheers,
Steve.

hi,
sure. make a file called opera9.lnk and put this in it:-

table Icon
  Type: Program
  Caption: Opera-9.0
  Command: wine /home/dsl/.wine/drive_c/Program_Files/Opera/Opera.exe
  Icon: .xtdesktop/opera9.png
  X: 138
  Y: 309
end

Save it to /home/dsl/.xdesktop

you can steal the icon from opera-9.0.uci. Save it in  /home/dsl/.xdesktop  , and namel it opera9.png (if it's called somthing different)

Oh also rename /home/dsl/.wine/drive_c/Program Files     to     /home/dsl/.wine/drive_c/Program_Files/     , as the command doesn't like gaps!

hope this makes sense,
Cheers
Steve.

It should make no difference, providing you have the wine command followed by the path to the exe file ur executing. If it works in terminal, then it will work in the lnk file.  smile.gif

sudo

But probably best to change the permissions to the file path.
