Xdsl Installed ... Xromwell Not Loading
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:01:00 AM »

So, I downloaded Xdsl 0.5, burned a CD of the and got that to work just fine.  Performed a frugal install and rebooted into EvoX.

Problem is, when I got into the KNOPPIX folder and opened the default.xbe in EvoX... nothing happened.  No blue Xromwell screen.  However when I tried again to boot from the CD, the fatX option pops up (so I know its on there).

Any way I can load XDSL without always sticking in the boot-CD?

absolutely!

make sure "linuxboot.cfg" is on the root of E as well as "initrd.gz","linux24"you can edit linuxboot.cfg to tell where to look for these items, mine are in the knoppix folder and on the root of E just cause I never took the time to clean it up lol.

and make a folder in your apps folder E(or F)/apps/linux/default.xbe, and copy the default.xbe off the disc into there. (its probably already there from doing the frugal install but check anyway.

Nope, still isn't working...

Just to double check, I have initrd.gz, linux42 and KNOPPIX in e:/KNOPPIX

linuxboot.cfg directly in e:/   ... and its contents:

title XDSL
kernel KNOPPIX/linux24
initrd KNOPPIX/initrd.gz
append root=/dev/ram0 init=/etc/init rw video=xbox:640x480 frugal quiet kbd-reset

and default.xbe's in E:/apps/linux/

Yet I'm still stuck at EvoX's loading screen when I try to open 'Linux'.  Wonder, could my problems have anything to do with how my system was modded?

heres mine

title XDSLRUNNIN ON RAM
kernel linux24
initrd minirt24.gz
append root=/dev/ram0 init=/etc/init rw video=xbox:640x480 mydsl=hda50 lang=us quiet kbd-reset

title XDSL Loopback install
kernel KNOPPIX/linux24
initrd KNOPPIX/ird-loop.gz
append root=/dev/ram0 init=/etc/init rw video=xbox:640x480 quiet kbd-reset

save that as linuxboot.cfg and put it on E, then copy the two files linux24, and loopgz to the root of e as well as inside of your knoppix folder.

Tried that, didn't work  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

... I've been reading up a little on xbox-Linux.org, and I realized that I have a MS Dashboard with a 5960 version.

I'm sure this question has been asked many times around here, but is there any way I can get Linux running on my 5960 'box?

Maybe a link to where I can get started, like for a tutoral, would be best.

the first thing I do when I mod an XBOX, is upgrade the dash to the newest version. Which happens to be 5960, Im guessing thats the final Dashboard of XBOX 1.

The "Version" XBOX is what really matters...not the dashboard or the kernel
1.6's havnt been capable of Linux because of the video chip used in them.

if your XBOX was made after 04/2004 I dont think Linux will run "easily" this is about the time, the 1.6's were first seen. (credits to google/x-scene for that date)

I was having a similar problem to to this i think. I used the frugal instal of xdsl to me e partition but when i ftp to the xbox i cannot see any sign of it. Again i knew it was there because when i booted from the cd the fatx option was there.  My fix was to take the default.xbe from the xdsl cd and add it to a folder on the hdd. Then i edited the evox.inf to add a menu option which runs the xdsl default.xbe and everything appears to boot like it does if i boot from the cd. It seems to work so far tho i've only just done it which i why i was searching the forums for confirmation that this is correct.

1.6 Xbox's will run linux. The only difference is the overscan problem with the xcalibur chip
