X-dsl V0.5
« on: December 19, 2005, 06:00:00 PM »

Consider this an early christmas present  biggrin.gif ...

X-DSL v0.5 has just been released. It's available to download from

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ckage_id=151661

It's based on DSL 2.1RC2. There been a lot of changes made to Damn Small Linux which are now incorperated in X-DSL:
  • Updated Firefox
  • A choice of window managers: JWM and fluxbox
  • FLwriter replaced with Ted
  • Added GtkFind utility
  • New system monitor (Torsmo)
  • Many more updates / tweaks

On the Xbox side I've been busy too:
  • When booting with the cheatcode lang=xbox X-DSL will read the user settings from the EEPROM and try and setup the locale (timezone, keymap, etc) appropriately.
  • If DHCP broadcast fails X-DSL will use the Xbox network settings stored in the Disk Config Area. This means that the internet in X-DSL should 'just work' without any configuration for the majority of people.
  • Improvements to the xpad mouse emulation: can move diagnally with the d-pad, the right analog stick can be used to scroll up/down.
  • If you boot with the cheatcode joyd you can now use back/start on any xpad to cycle workspaces, white/black to cycle through apps and both triggers + back + start to shutdown.

How do I installed it???????

I burned it onto a DVD-R and it loads and I all see is a blue screen that says some stuff like recognizing my DVD-ROM and stuff. And then it gets stuck on the blue screen and nothing happens.

Thanks!

The only problem that I am having is that although I selected 640x480, the screen is 'cut off' at the sides.  Is there any way to adjust it?

XDSL BAR NONE!

I Think without question XDSL has to be the best linux for the xbox for a number of reasons.

1. SPEED. DAMN SMALL LINUX (DSL) on which X-DSL is based is designed to run on limited hardware. In point of fact it is designed to run on much lower spec hardware than the xbox. I personally use DSL on a 486DX P120 with 32MB.

2. SMALL OPTIMISED APPLICATIONS. X-DSL does not contain BLOATWARE. All the programs bundled with X-DSL are small in size and optimised to use less resources.

3. Fast easy to use window managers that like the bundled software are optimised to use less resources.

4. Great support from "friedgold" the geizer who ported dsl to the xbox along with a few other guys that remain firmly within his shadow.
