This has nothing to do with linux.. But sure i can help you.. (Next time post a question like this in the XBE exploits)

You need to do whats called a cold boot meaning boot Halo with it inside the tray and you can now saftly get on xbox-linux.. If you have a mod chip.. Just disable the chip (i doubt that you do)

Are you running to run linux? Or play XBL?

How is your xbox modded? Softmod or Hardmod? If you don't know you'll need to ask your friend.

Sound like he flashed the TSOP.  You can change it back using an Exploitable game (007 Agent under Fire, Mechassault, Splinter Cell).  Check the TSOP forum (click here) for more details.  

If he didn't open you xbox up when you took it back then the 'Write enable' poits should still be soldered

When i tried to log on to xbox live with halo it would go to some weird screen and say ERROR GET YOUR XBOX CHECKED or something weird. So then i disabled it and it was fine
