bump.

freidgold may i also point out that i do not receive any error messages at all and dsl claims that it has successfully completed installation.

however upon reboot all i have is the filesystem, is there a way for me to manually finish the rest of the install?

I was having the same troubles with the loopback install from the CD, so I did an FTP install of the frugal setup then ran the loopback install.  It did create the correct files that time.  Give it a try.

Look at the bottom here to see what you need for FTP install.

i would have preferred the F drive though but no worries.

update - i just tried theloopback install to the E drive now, while running frugal off of tjhe E drive, and while i had no default.xbe, i just ranm the one i used previsouly, and it said 'root filesystem found' (or something like that) when launching, so i think it did it smile.gif

freidgold - this is what xterminal reports (it would be so much easier if i knew how to copy and paste in linux)

when booting DSL i get a continuous error, i can't remember exactly what it said but it is related to USB initialisation, however my keyboard and controller still work, is this normal?

also speaking of controllers, is there a way i can get cromwell to recognise my wireless controller, i know this is not a fault of the developers and is to do with cromwell.

in the readme it describes editing a source.list file to enable the apt-get utility, i have found the file but it is write protected, can someone please tell me how to allow writing to this file as im eager to start installing stuff smile.gif

i know not kinda related to DSL, but does anyone here use GAIM in DSL? i have installed the DSL extension for Gaim but it is extremely glitchy and i receive a frequent error window when using the MSN part of the program. for example if i load more than two conversation windows at once i cannot access the message box at all. would perhaps installing via apt-get be better? if anyone can help with this i would greatly appreciate it.

another thing not the fault of the devs, but im having some serious problems with window and font sizes. i know that using it on a TV (running 800x600 res) is never going to be as good as using a proper monitor, but perhaps something i can do (or even better the devs smile.gif) to improve things.
for example gaim, the window is way too large, fills more than the screen and i have to frequently resize it, the font is way to large in every aspect of the program so to resize the winow to fit cuts off 90% off the text sad.gif
also, in things like xterminal and all text based things, the font is too small to read. im also at a disadvantage because of this right now as im typing this message in firefox in DSL, sat ~2 metres from the TV screen and i can barely read what im typing (so please forgive me if this long post is riddled with spelling mistakes).

please i apologise if this long rant makes me sound ungrateful, but im not, i am extremely thankful for everything Freidgold and Keo-Keo have done (and any other devs) but i am having trouble getting the best experience i can out of this great distribution..

if anyone can offer any help regarding these matters then please post.

P.S by the way if its not clear in the post above i am new to linux dry.gif

Right now the best way to run XDSL is either native F or Loopback on E.. With the cromwell problem i think friedgold would be best suited to anwser that but i would join the mailing list and email the xbox-linux team i'm sure they could enlighten us!

As for the font issue's in programs.. Most of the font issues are out of the hands of the xdsl dev's at least a real fix. This is because some of the fonts are hard coded with the DSL extentions or the program's themselfs. I'm sure if we looked in to the issue more we might be able to find a patch for that.

Also about the wireless controllor is it working in XDSL fine? Or just not working in cromwell.

About the apt-get it's best to use that in a loopback or native install and choose enhanced ver. This will enable it then edit the source.list and comment everything out except for testing (# is a comment out)

2nd i really need no credit as of now Friedgold has been the man to take it all really.. ONce the summer comes you'll see XDSL really take off from my end i promise.

3rd total_ass you've done a great job.. We used to help noobs all the time in the XBE xploits forum. I don't mind helping you out at all and actually you've helped finds some bugs we wouldn't have found ourself..

happy.gif . i receive an error when attenpting to execute 'apt-get update'. i'll post some more info later regarding this if you dont mind.

as for the fonts, well it couldnt hurt to ask biggrin.gif

i'm sure that you have contributed towards it as well and you are justr being modest. i enjoy this distribution that you two have worked on and have done a great job porting it to the xbox.

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

this is the error i receive when trying to 'apt-get update'. i did choose the enhanced install (im 100% certain) and as you said it should have edfited the source.list file to locate the app depository but it looks from this error that it hasn't. or is the error related to something else?

wink.gif )

is there a way i can view all programs available on the apt-get list? i can't see a command that shows the apps that can actually be downloaded.

where does apt-get install stuff to and where do the DSL extensions go once downloaded and installed? i have been trying lots of stuff today and i want to remove any crap ive downloaded/installed. is it a simple case of deleting the files or is there a particular method needed for uninstalling like windows?

thanks again smile.gif
