yes
yes and no

1. you could run dynbolic, debian, gentoox (but you need to resize the rootfs and set it to readonly)
2. Linux has an optimized filesystem which handles fragmentation ALOT better than windows, usually you'd have like 1% after like months of use and it usually doesnt go very high is I remeber

if you have enough hd space you could just place the xbe and the linux files on the hd and run them as an app, but if you want to run them from like a disc then dynebolic and debian already have that option, gentoox would take some work

with gentoox you first need to resize the rootfs to fit on a cd rom if you dont have a dvd burner but I assum that you do. well linux on the xbox is really actually more of an app.
Most poeple think you cant play games anymore, but games are an OS, but in terms of an xbox it is an app, so linux is an app on the xbox.

Well I ll try and make a more optimized gentoox version that will even be more stripped down but has a gui. Im sure if I remove or reorder the services you could make linux boot and run faster that it already does

well im off to best buy to buy a new xbox, damn 1.6's their so made cheaply, I had to break by 1.3 and my new 1.6 (dont ask)

I really needed the 1080i, but i think that is not an option in the 1.6's right?

Yup, the highest you can go with a 1.6 right now is 480p.

Buy an older version Xbox off ebay or from the BST board. That's what I would do if you really needed the higher resolutions.

EDIT: Or if you can find one in stores, buy a used Xbox.
