Okey so ur on dhcp.. they shouldn't affect you in that case..
but if you edit /etc/conf.d/net.. are you positive that you got dhcp enabled there?

and yes, you do the commands in a console window, or through ssh

EDIT: you might allso want to check if your dhcp box / router / whatever is actually giving out a ip to your linux and not ignoring it, try unplugging the cable, starting up so that your linux has fully booted up, then plugin the cable and wait a while.. that might help
