Gentoox Ftp Install
« on: April 13, 2004, 11:03:00 PM »

Hey,

I'm aiming at running gentoox of a softmodded xbox but since I didn't have that much luck burning a readable gentoox iso I went for the ftp install. I used the Mechassault exploit and got a booting kernel and a ftp server.
However, it seems like the rootfs file is 3GB and that the fatx filesystem only handles files below 2GB...
Have I misunderstod something here?

Since I'm not running the PBL project it seems like I need to sign all xbe files I want to load. This means that I need to sign gentooxx.xbe before running it, right?

uhh the fatx limit is 4 gig and not 2 gig..

yes u will have to sign the xbe

also u probly wont be able to eject ur drive cuz u dont have a bios with the reset on eject fix

why not just use pbl??

Maybe I should go for the PBL project... I just wanted to keep it as simple as possible and load a kernel as soon as I could get away with it.

Anyway, my ftp connection dies after transfering 2GB so I guess I have a outdated xbox kernel which can only handle 2GB files? My xbox is a 1.3 but I don't know which kernel/dashboard I'm using (how can I tell? Sorry, I'm new to all this xbox hacking). Maybe I could update the kernel/dashboard with a update from a new game?

I did plan to turn the unpartitioned space of my disk into a reiserfs partition so I wouldn't have to mount the whole rootfs as a loopback device but since I'm new to the xbox I figured I better go for a "standard" install. Is it possible just to do a normal gentoo install to the unpartitioned space and use a font/audio exploit to load a kernel loader?

btw. it sound pretty cool with the xbox linux from scratch project...

i dont know where u heard that but their is no kernel that only supports 2 gig files.  its in the fatx drivers.  itll allow up to 4.  check ur free space or sumtin.  and thanx bout my upcoming project.  heh im almost ready for a release.  just gotta get a few proggies installed and then get my server fixed so ppl can download it.

and yes if u use stardust you can do a native install to the unpartitioned space.  then just use the audio exploit to launch evox, then use evox to launch gentoox... :)

In that case I have a pretty strange problem...
My file transfer stops exactly when 2GB has been transfer, 2147483647 bytes.
There's plenty of space left on E (2.6GB) so that shouldn't be the problem.
I tried with different ftp clients suchs as ncftp, standard ftp and konqueror but they all fail at the same point.

Any other ideas about what could be wrong???

Actually linux kernels haven't supported files >2GB for a long time, and the newer ones do support it, however you have to make sure it is compiled in your kernel.

What is the error that you get with the FTP programs?

Hey guys,

Sorry for beening a bit slow with the posting but I had some work to do...

I'm using gentoo with a 2.4 kernel on my laptop and it has no problems with that kind of file sizes.
My xbox is only running the Mechassault exploit which can boot a "emergency" with a ftp server from the MS dashboard (live entry in dashboard replaced by linux entry...). Maybe the problem is that this ftp server cannot handle my 3GB rootfs. I guess I should try the evox ftp server instead.

But thanks for all the help so far  :)
I'll let you know as soon as I tried the evox ftp server.

btw. if I finally manage to burn a useful iso from my crappy burner, I would still need to sign the xbe on the cd to make it run, right? I don't have a mod chip installed...

EDIT:
My ftp client error was something like:
Lost data connection to remote host: Broken pipe
Remote host has closed the connection
put rootfs: socket write error

ya if its mechinstaller gentoox dont work with it anyway.  its alot of politics and its a long story but its  not supported.  just get an sumthing like mordens audio exploit installer.  that will boot thru mechassult or 007auf and it runs pbl so no signing needed. once audio exploit is installed just boot to the exploit and install gentoox thru the mxm ftp...
