Gentoox Hdtv 480p
« Reply #15 on: January 18, 2004, 08:38:00 AM »

thanks for all your help so far game

Here is the answers to your questions and what I have done so far. At this stage only 720p is recognised as a HDTV feed 480p comes through but TV does not beleive it is a Hidef signal

if I ask for settings in 480p it comes back with the following

mode "704x480-60"
   # D: 27.028 MHz, H: 31.502 kHz, V: 60.003 Hz
   geometry 704 480 704 480 32
   timings 36998 48 42 29 9 64 7
   accel true
   rgba 8/16,8/8,8/0,0/0
endmode

if I ask for settings in 720p it comes back with the following

mode "1280x720-60"
   # D: 74.250 MHz, H: 45.000 kHz, V: 60.000 Hz
   geometry 1280 720 1280 720 8
   timings 13468 220 70 22 3 80 5
   accel true
   rgba 8/0,8/0,8/0,0/0
endmode

---------------------------------------------------------------
here is the steps I have taken so far all in KDE 3.1 (but did muck around in XFCE for a while as well.

1, I ran Magic several times until no more errors

2, then I ran the following (thanks Game)

magic fix displaytools1 && magic fix xfcepatch1 && magic

3, ran xbvset and selected HDTV

4, SSH in as root and type the following as per the HDTV page at xbox-linux

480p, type

fbset -g 720 480 720 480 32 -t 37000 56 18 31 7 64 7

720p

fbset -g 1280 720 1280 720 8 -t 13468 220 70 22 3 80 5

4, edited /etc/X11 XF86Config and change the following

Section "Modes"
       Identifier      "default"
       Modeline        "480p" 27.028  704  746  810  858 480 489 496 525 -hsync -vsync
       Modeline        "720p" 74.251 1280 1350 1430 1650 720 723 728 750 -hsync -vsync
EndSection

Section "Screen"
       Identifier      "Default Screen"
       Device          "Nv"
       Monitor         "Generic Monitor"
       DefaultDepth    24
       SubSection "Display"
               Depth           24
               Modes           "720p"
       EndSubSection
EndSection

5, I entered the following to save new XF86Config (cause it gets over written )

cp XF86Config XF86Config.hdtv

6, Then I entered the following to reboot

shutdown -r -t 0 now

Contents of linuxboot.cfg for 480p
kernel vmlinuz initrd initrd append init=/linuxrc root=/dev/ram0 kbd-reset
video=xbox:480p,nohwcursor,tv=HDTV

Contents of linuxboot.cfg for 720p
kernel vmlinuz initrd initrd append init=/linuxrc root=/dev/ram0 kbd-reset
video=xbox:720p,nohwcursor,tv=HDTV

Tried 480p and 720p and still doesnt fit screen geopmentry (way to big) and still has over scan

I need to change geometry I think but not sure what to change it to???

HDTV 480p Fixed!

Thanks (again!) to Oliver Schwartz, we now have HDTV 480p mode working! To get the update, run "magic fix displaytools1 && magic" then follow the on screen instructions. Let me know how it turns out!

720p still not really very legible but is a true HD feed and 480p still comming up in NTSC mode (TV does not see it as a true HD feed).

 I would really like to talk to someone who has a HD TV and gentoox working on a HDTV not on X2VGA and if they have it working paste the steps they took thanks

The "480p" mode is shadowy and hard to read geometry is still off (played with various settings)

Maybe it is just me but still not working properly

I've got Gentoox up and running on my HDTV, both 480p and 720p.  My TV definitely recognizes the HD signal.  Problem is, Gentoox is still not all that legible.  With the default settings, both are pretty blurry... I get a lot of flicker and double-image (especially at the top of my screen), and lots of overscan... geometry seems a bit off as well.  I don't think we'll ever get the crispness of a native 720p or 1080i game.

All I can suggest is to play around with xvidtune and maybe you will find some other setting for Horiz and Vertical refresh that will work on your screen.  Choose "Auto" and you can try different settings on the fly.  You might have to go wider, or narrower, or shorter, or taller, and then move the whole thing up and down.  Lots of flicker with some settings, and less with others.

XB,  I also have HDTV 480p running and it is as crisp as could be.  The only problems would be the overscan and the resolution is still a little high.

I have a 55" widescreen and when i have the browser open I can not view the entire contents of the page without scrolling.  Other then that It is great

i do not have a hd tv yet but i do wanna buy one when they get a bit cheaper. you should contact shallax for the bugs with screen shots.

Very strange I verify if it is a HDTV feed  by pressing Widescreen or zoom (or what ever) and if it resizes I assume is not HDTV (example 720p does not allow resize)

I have mucked around with settings not progressing :-(

XB, my last option would be to tell you to do a fresh install.  You may just want to give that a shot...run the magic update before you go to sleep (since this update will take about 5 - 6 hours

You may have botched something up.  At this point you really have nothing to lose.  Give it a shot and let me know if it works.

Thanks Gabe think I will try that while I am at work today and FTP a new rootfs over.  I must admit I have hacked any file I could find related to video in any way but I thought I was being carefull with backing up.

I will start FTPing now this is my Plan if it is incorrect or I have missed a step please tell me

I will not modify XF86Config / Linuxboot.cfg or run fbset as I will assume it is all handled by the new patch xbvset correct ?

1, delete Gentoox completly

2,  FTP gentoox V3.0c distro all files and boot xbe

3, run magic until completed without errors

4, run magic fix displaytools1 && magic fix xfcepatch1 && magic

5, select HDTV in xbvset and 480p

6, reboot and enjoy (or pray)

See you in 8 -10 hours. (FTP slow as only 11mbit wireless)

If i was you I would delete everything.  Also you dont need to run

4, run magic fix displaytools1 && magic fix xfcepatch1 && magic

as that will update when you run magic after the fresh install.

Let me know how it works out;.

OK I sorted my TV no longer working after magic being run problem I modded the linuxboot.cfg to reference old kernal and all worked fine Dodgy kernal in tv mode ??

kernel oldlinuz
initrd initrd.gz
append init=/linuxrc root=/dev/ram0 kbd-reset video=xbox:800x600,nohwcursor,hoc=x,voc=y

I tried renaming kernal oldlinuz to vmlinuz but screen was still scrambled??? maybe casue it's 1am any way this fixes TV mode until someone comes up with a good modeline to get a clearer picture in 720p
