1024 X 768 On Gentoox Home V2.0 Howto
« on: July 03, 2003, 03:45:00 PM »

I've already noticed a problem - for some reason Divx 3.11 encoded movies won't run on either Mplayer or Xine using the xv driver if you're running Gentoox at 1024x768. My guess would be due to a lack of memory. I've tried every setting in mplayer but the only way I could get Divx3.11 to play was to use x11 as my video driver - and as this doesn't allow a fullscreen display it's pretty useless for movie watching.

If this bothers you then just switch back to 1024x576 - which didn't have this problem.

BTW, this is the error message:

Starting playback...
VDec: vo config request - 704 x 352 (preferred csp: Planar YV12)
VDec: using Planar YV12 as output csp (no 0)
Movie-Aspect is undefined - no prescaling applied.
VO: [xv] 704x352 => 704x352 Planar YV12
[ws] Error in display.
[ws]  Error code: 11 ( BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation) )
[ws]  Request code: 141
[ws]  Minor code: 19
[ws]  Modules: vo_check_events

Looks like a memory allocation problem of some kind.

Thanks for the update on this hack (I was playing with it as well.) Did you manage to get wmaker to work cause kde is just a major RAM hog and runs to slow?

Also in 1024*768 or higher did it kick into 720P or 1080i mode?

The 1024 * 568 actually looks really cool on my screen especially for playing mpg's and viewing pics. I actually had my wife using mozilla today so she could see mpg's on the big screen (who'd have thought)

No. Progressive scan support is still *very* preliminary - they are working on it but it will take some time before a 720p or 1080i mode will be implemented in Linux.  Check out the Gmane develop forum for up-to-the-minute development news:

I have tried to run Divx 3.11 movies under Fluxbox but the same problem occurs - it isn't a RAM problem then, but a video memory allocation problem. Or perhaps my install is just screwed up - I'm going to re-apply it to a clean rootfs and see what happens.

Yes, XBLamer, I've noticed that xbv doesn't automatically set the resolution to 1024 x 576 / 1024 x 768 when using a window manager other than KDE - it just gives a black screen. I'm able to SSH into my Xbox and then type in the following commands to fix it (somewhat):

/etc/xbv/xbv -f -m 3

and then:

/etc/xbv/xbv -f -NTSC -auto 1024 576 10.00 10.00 > /dev/null

But the screen is severely messed up. I'll try to find a fix for it as I too would like to ditch KDE in favour of something faster.

I tried this resolution setting using a simpler but probably less consistent method as outlined in my last reply to the previous tutorial for 1024x576 and was again successful.  Quickly: 1- Changed the X display settings under KDE Control Center to 1024x768 and saved those settings 2- opened konsole and ran the xbvset patch and answered "0" for the first and last questions and for the question in between I put "-auto 1024 768 9.5 0.0"  3- waited for to xbox to reboot and restarted Gentoox with new resolution.  Like i said in my last post i dont know if this will work for everyone but it might be worth a try.  If anyone thinks i should post this as a new topic under the heading "the lazy method" I'lll be glad to do it.

I have not had problems with divx 3.11 using xv driver at this resolution.  I generally start the movie at normal size and than switch to full screen because i have found that if i start the movie in full screen it will freeze sometimes.  Have you tried that.  I did not reconfiger my config file manually though and used xbvset to get the higher resolution...not sure if that has anything to do with it.  Maybe I should post my config file? Let me know.

Very interesting, so far I have tried just about anything but I haven't got it to work. So I'd be pleased if you could post your config files.

In particular, these are the ones of interest to me:

the mplayer.conf file in /etc/
the xbvinit file in /etc/conf.d/
and XF86Config file in /etc/X11/

Send me a PM or post it here if you'd like.
