i like that its called tosp dude well i say 50% of the time tosp flash goes horridly wrong and ya still need a chip in the end. in my case i dont need a bigger hd or all the features a modchip has couse i dont need them i wanna simply run linux and xbmp emus etc. i dont wanna run backups/priecy i think thats a lame excuse to have a chip. if your to cheap to buy games you should have never bought a xbox.

well i will correct myself on the bigger hd if linux had 3d acell maybe i would put a 20 or 40 gig in there and do the 128meg memery upgrade and use it as my full pc. so i might whant a chip then. simply couse it would be cool to have a cracked out webtv for my family to use and they wouldent need to bother me to use my reg pc.

i aruldy have a dreamcast laned to my pc they use to surf the web with but its getting very old and doesent support all the stuff a full os does.

I bought an Xbox before I even knew about the scene, and i rarely played it. Not interesting to me. Then I got a modchip for piracy, xbmp, emu so I didn't buy an Xbox for the piracy..I already had one. And I think you are the minority here that hasn't "backed up" games

yea thats a valid point i wasent instrested in the xbox untill i lerned it could do more then games. xbmp emus etc. if it didnt have all those extras i would have probly replaced my broken ps2 insted of scraping it for a xbox. i like to call xboxes gaming pcs lol. couse ya can run linux or xbox games without worring abought is your pc to slow to run this game.

personaly i think m$ has lerned alot for the scean weather they like to admit it or not. couse they now knoe what people whant to see in a xbox.  and im shure some things will be in the xbox2.

i mean look at ps1 vs n64. the ps1 was clearly the weaker system but it stomped the n64 flat couse it could do more. its no longer a war of who can build the faster console its whitch one packs the most stuff out of box. sony has lerned this take a lookat the new jap ps2 its rigged up like a xbox.

hell when they cracked the dreamcast they flew off the shelvs and gave sega a second wind for a wile but of couse the lack off good games and sega stupidty killed it again.

If this is true M$ is screwed.

1) A signed version of linux would mean businesses could buy xboxes and legaly use them for server farms. M$ would loose a lot of money on those console sales which will never be made up.

2) If the hack were released, a lot more people would likely pirate games since no mod-chip would be needed.

However, option 2 pretty much only screws game developers and would not hurt M$ as much as option 1 does.  Secondly, with the claimed backward compatability of xbox2, option 1 would continue to hurt M$ for some time, where the hack could be closed in xbox 2.

Consequently, I think M$ will sell out its developers and allow the hack to be released.  Though, they would come out and say that.  They will pretend to be working towards a signed linux bootloader as a stall tactic.  As long as they are in negotiations, the group can not release the hack.  If they can push off the hack 6 months to a year then it really wont matter much because the hype machine would have kicked in for xbox 2.

If the hack exists, it should just be released.

But my friend, they ARE selling you a computer, just marketed as a gaming console. Thats the whole point.

A console is a computer, all consoles are including 2600's, Gba's and Nes's.

A console isn't a PC (I don't just mean ibm compatible), an xbox isn't a pc, yeah you turn it into one (Just like a DC or a PS2) but out of the box it's a console and all you can do is what M$ want you to. We add a chip to allow us to boot custom code which then turns the console into a pc. Any console could be modded in such ways (whether there would be any point would be a different matter) the xbox is no more a pc because it has a x86 processor than the gamecube is a Mac because of it's powerpc chip.

Some of you have no respect. So the xbox is just a computer huh? The only reason it is 'just a computer' is because of the hard work of a few people. You didn't hack the box. Someone else did all the work so you can call it 'just a computer'. Sure it's just a computer but not because of you...or me. That statement is getting old really quick.

Your gosh darn right it had to be hacked....that's the point. M$ is making us have to hack a computer to use it the way we want to and they don't like the idea of a pc that is monopolized by whatever company makes it or atleast that's the point this group seems to be making. ps2 and gamecube don't have hard drives...so it'd be kinda hard to have a pc without a hard drive

So please take this in jest.
I think the Xbox and PS2 are great consoles designed
by some of the most talented engineers in the industry.

So....
WTF?
The xbox is not a computer. hummmmmm...

Then what is it, a grape?

It’s was a closed system.
Now its Open.
That’s the Only difference.

When it was a closed system:
How does that make it more than just a computer?
How could have it ever be or have been more than just a computer?

I have worked on many closed systems.
With hardware and OS's that only run on that system. Period.
No Posix compliance. Nothing.
I have never called any of them just a "console."
I call them computers because that’s all they are... ever.
Sometimes I say go to this -console- and do this.
Or go to this -workstation- and do that.
I would hope that none of them think I am talking about their freaking Xbox or PS2.

Lets all just argue semantics until we are blue in the face.
Console
I got lemons.... In both eyes now...

PC, Console, Windows, Linux, MAC, x86, CISC, RISC, SDK, XDK... Mr. Computer.
Its not only Dutch, it’s Greek and Latin too.

In the mean time I am going to play with this new no-mod complex hack...

Vic20:

C=64:

Now... I could have sworn reading an post on slashdot talking about how one kid was able to get the RSA (what ever it is) Key from his xbox somehow but M$ Quickly shut him down? Was I reading that right? If so is it possible one of these people figured out how to do it and now have the Key themselves? Just a few Ideas
