it's an operating system. an alternative to mac o.s. or windows. you can run it from the xbox and use it just like a normal computer running linux.

That's way too general of a question to ask here. Check out a linux-specific distro's site, like www.mandrake.com or www.debian.org. It'll give you a much better idea than what any of us can tell you.
In short, you can do alot: play games, run software, surf the web, and ALOT of other stuff.

As well, Linux offers a lot more support because it is a FREE operating system, and is open source so there is a better community backing it up, as well as willing to offer help.

http://www.justlinux.com has many tut's on how to get certain things started in Linux, as well as great community forums.
