Apt-get Update. . .
« on: April 06, 2003, 09:29:00 PM »

Not sure how ya pulled it off, but it's trying to connect to the localhost (i.e. your machine) to get the file, which is silly: if you had it, you wouldn't need to get it, right? smile.gif
Try reconfiguring the sources so it doesn't try to use localhost. Not sure how (I don't use Debian anymore), but I believe dselect makes it pretty easy to do. It's the first menu selection, up at the top.

Well I don't have all night to try this. So I'm just shutting it down and I'll try again tomarow. Since I expect I'll get the same thing, I'd still apprecaite all input. Thanks.

Well, tell us what distro you're using (I'm assuming Debian, as that one's the one that comes shipped with apt-get). If you're new to Linux, I'd suggest using dselect instead of a raw apt-get command; it streamlines the process a bit.

Well I ran dselect, and it did the update. It still came up with the errs, but I just let it run. Then it said it was done but when I tried to do an apt-get dist-upgrade, it came up with some error about not being able to get the right packages and to run apt-get update to fix the problem. So I run apt-get update and it just gives me a string of errors:
QUOTE

W: Couldn't stat source package list http://localhost________
(2 No such file or directory)

With the "_____" being a different address. And if I try to just do the ap-get dist-upgrade it just tells me the same errors (I kind of expected that). So now what am I soposted to do?

ok, BEFORE you try to get ANY packages, first reconfigure your sources. It's the first selection, at the top, when dselect opens up. When you select that, it will have a list of what sources can be had. I'm pretty sure it's called 'FTP', but it may be 'Internet'. The point is, you want to download the packages, so use the internet. It'll update the sources list, ask you if it's jiggy, and then try installing the packages.
EDIT: I'd HIGHLY suggest using Mandrake 9.1. Debian is slow and a little hard to learn. Mandrake installs a desktop and automatically loads it up for you when you boot up the computer. So it's easier to learn if you're familiar with Windows.

In mandrake, just type "setup8", and it'll install just like debian (you keep your xbox files).

See, I was told that I had to install Mandrake with "setup 8" first then put my data on, but that there was still a chance of my Mandrake data effecting my Xbox data; and that Debian didn't touch a thing and was the best way to go for my wants and needs (RM playback and none of my Xbox data touched. Oh well, I aready have Debian installed, no use going back and intsalling Mandrake, unless you really think it would be the easiest way to go. I'm looking for the easiest way since I only plan on useing it for MR playback untill XBMP gets it working right. Thanks for all the help so far, I really appreciate it.

Both debian and mandrake (setup8) install 2 files on your E drive; RootFS (2GB or user set) and Swap (256MB or user set).

Mandrake is easier and more "n00b" friendly smile.gif

Ok, if I install Mandrake;
What is the minimum size for RootFS and Swap?
Does it come with MPlayer?
If not, does it have X11 support?
Will my Debian version of RealPlayer 8 still work?
Or will I have to get a new one?

Those are my main concerns, besides data loss, but I'm pretty sure I don't have to worry about that.

Well, I'd like to stick with what I got. All I want is to play RM files at fullscreen. I can get it to work in MPlayer, but it playsback at about 3x speed (picture and sound). So if any of you know how to fix that (without apt-get) then that would be prefered. I was just told elsewhere to apt-get update then apt-get upgrade, and that would update my MPlayer and fix the problem. But of course that is what is not giving me the trouble, so I'd like to either just fix MPlayer or fix apt-get, which ever is easiest. So please is there anyone who can help?

Do I want to change this? And if so should I do it through dselect or in a text editor?

You definately want to change those, quite a few people have had problems with those sources, including me. You should go through that file with a text editor and either comment each line out or delete all the entries. Then at the command line type apt-setup and add a few local mirrors off of there, it works a lot better I think. You might also want to do apt-get clean.

I think that's the list of sources you're trying to download from.  You can do a "man apt-get" and look at the files apt-get reads from.

EDIT: I left it at the screen where it says that it failed to connect to the source, and then this just came up:
QUOTE
ls_leaf: free space seems wrong: level-1, mr_items=27, free_space=65070 rdkey

vs-13070: relserfs_read_inode2: i/o failure occured trhying to find stat data of

And it's repeated 7 times (8 total on screen). Now it's just sitting idle. What just happened?

Well it just did it again.  Oh well, I hate to do so, but I'm giving up on Debian. Maybe I'll try again later, once I figure all this out. Thanks for all your help.
