Theres gotta be a way to have Windows 98, or XP through Xbox Linux so we can run AIM, games, kazaa, and different sorts like that!! I know theres ram issues, but its also possible to add ram. Windows XP might not be possible, but I KNOW 98 doesent take to much ram. So can't we join together and find out how to do this? I was one told the xbox has no limitations, so lets make that statement correct! smile.gif Anyways, post ways you think it might be possible. Thanks.  jester.gif

Well you'd have to write device drivers for every device in the XBOX... good luck.

Are you sure? Cuz I heard of somthing where within linux you run Windows 98/XP whatever. So the reason I think it would be hard to run is because it runs Linux AND Win and the same time. If there was a way to power down linux to a very low processor usage output, it would be easier to run the Win...

This is not as simple as one might believe.  Actually, it is incrediblely difficult, I will not touch it with a ten foot poll.

You can run AIM through linux, I think it's called mAIM or something rather.  There are all sorts of linux alternatives to AIM.

There's problems with win 98 running on XBOX, win98 only supports up to a certain processor speed, I dont remember what speed, but it does.  I know it doesn't run very fast proseccers.  Second, Win98 has NO USB SUPPORT!!!  Aaaaaah!!!  I do know that if Win98 was EVER going to run on an xbox, most likely it would have to be 2nd edition.  But I do have a Win98 cd that says "with usb support" on it.  But it's a special cd.

Drivers wouldnt be a problem.  A standard ( well, almost) DVD drive.  Emerson, that is.  and what else?  The hard drive is normal.  There are drivers released for an xbox controller.

Basicaly, mostly USB support issues, but other than that, it would be great if u guys got it up and running.

I don't know, but since XBOX runs on a Win2K kernel, could it run Win2K???

Well we'd first have to find drivers, which doesn't sound that difficult. Make a custom computer bios. We might also have to tweak the CPU to be x86 compatible. Hey why don't you try to write an open source graphics driver for linux first! Then we'll talk about how to port it to xbox.

WHy not just buy a computer for say $300 to run kazaa and aim? (700 mhz, 64mb of ram, 8gb HD, GeForce 3 chip set <if we got efficent drivers>) that shouldn't cost much.

AIM for windows is called GAIM I do believe.  WindowsXP will most likely not run on an xbox (EVER)

Ok, I have a p4 2.4ghz, and win 98 wont run on that.   Oh shit, I didn't mean processor, I meant hard drive.  Really, win 98 only does FAT32 or something gay like that.  Trust me, I have  a 40gig hard drive and win 98 wont run on it.  Unless you partition it into several small pieces.  Listen I'm not trying to crush your guy's dreams, in fact I totally support putting windows on XBOX, I am just trying to help find out the problems before you guys try it.

BTW, I dont work at best-buy, I'm a 13 yr. old Flash Developer, and Web Designer.  I know this because I built my own computer

I've had win98 running at 1.1.  Anyone who tells you that 98 has a speed limitation is either on crack or working for bestbuy(and probably still on crack).  The hard-drive and dvd-drive are not the problems.  The problems are writing drivers for the chipset, video, sound and fatx.  Good luck, saying that it would be extremely difficult to do is an understatement.  To even think of this would require a few developers that have experience writing windows device drivers (and hopefully work for nvidia).

Also the cpu is x86 compatible, its a pentium 3, thats why linux works.  And the bios, well uber took care of that for us.

Are you on crack? Linux works on any CPU because it's open sourced. They had to report the whole thing. Now go back to your hole.

That's about all you need to get windows up and running. You could try and solder on two extra ram chips so you get 128mb of ram, which I've seen working in hacking forum or somewere here.

Just cut back on all Linux resources and then allocate all VMWARE ram to emulated computer environment.

True, linux will run on any processor that there is a compiler for, that didn't come out right and was a stupid statement on my part.  But it is an x86 processor.  I do believe that they still used an x86 compiler.  All the porting is for other parts of the chipset, not the processor.  The xbox-linux project would probably not be happening if the processor was not x86.

My main point is that the drivers and fatx are the problems and it is not an easy one, especially with a closed source OS.  So as bucko pointed out, you may see versions of windows in an emulated environment, but I wouldn't expect to see it run by itself.

And depending on your hard-drive and bios, some computers require a partition smaller then 8 GB's to boot for fat32, but you would only have to have one other partion.  I personally used to have a 60gb drive with one partition running 98se just fine.
