What's The Speed Like For Xbox Linux?
« on: January 04, 2003, 12:33:00 AM »

Hey folks,

Just wondering what kind of performance you get out of Xbox Linux.  Debian or Mandrake, either one.

Do they run fast?  Do apps perform well?  Do apps load quickly?

I mean, there's only like 64 mb of ram, right?  I'm running Linux at home, but I've got a gig of ram there, so I can't imagine what 64 is like.

So, does it run well, or is it pretty sluggish?

Oh...and one more question.  How do the fonts look?  Are they easily readible?  I.E. can you use it as a webbrowser and a word processor that runs on your TV, or are the words too hard to read?

Thanks!

Alright folks...I know that atleast half of you have it installed, so surely you can give me some idea of it's performance and how the fonts look.

Come on guys...give a guy a break.

Well, I saw a video once, showing Mandrake running on the XBOX, and it booted FAST, and opened programs REALLY fast! But my install takes about 30 to 40 seconds to boot, perhaps longer I have not timed it exactly.
Then when it runs it takes about 3 or 4 seconds for a directory to open up, and a little longer for Mozilla or something, nothing like the video I saw. But then again if I could learn to disable all those unwanted processes at start up, that might help things out a lot.

As for games...

Well my friend said he ran Duke 3D under wine and it ran great, I was gonna test it under VMWare but have not yet. DOOM Legacy and ZDOOM run great, a HELL of a lot faster than they did in a standard install of Redhat on a computer I had that was a little aboce the XBOX's specs.

Hope that helps you some.

Awesome.  Thanks a lot guys.
Hey, for those that use it for web browsing and email, are the fonts readable enough to do so on a regular basis, or are they pretty tough to read?
Before risking losing all my backups, I want to know that it's worth doing.
Thanks again everyone!

Not a fan of Konqueror, huh?  Well, at least as a file system explorer, it rocks.  I tend to use Mozilla for web browsing too though.

Tip...if you didn't know about this feature, the thing that makes me enjoy using Mozilla more than internet explorer is it's tabbed browsing.  Next time you're running it, hit "Ctrl + T".  That'll open a new tab for a web page, rather than opening a whole new browser.  That kicks ass.  Try it out.

Hehehe don't forget about opera...tends to run faster than mozilla and has had the ability to function as an MDI program for a long time.  (Not to mention it has had mouse gestures for a long time also)

Might as well give it a shot if you haven't yet.

I tried it, but it's just too ugly.  Maybe if you mess with all the default font settings it gets nicer, but by default it's ugly.
It's pretty fast though.  Maybe even faster than Mozilla.
Did you have a similar experience?

I dunno i run linux, windows, and solaris so its nice to have the same browser across all the oses...not to mention the quick bar for disabling/enabling features in it.
For me looks aren't what is important, its whatever works best tongue.gif
Mozilla still has ways to go before i could think about switching to it as my normal browser.
