[q] When Every Hotswap Method Fails...
« on: January 14, 2013, 11:30:00 PM »

Now, I know something of this nature would belong in the newbie forums, but as I've exhausted every resource and spent three whole days trying, failing, and poking around at every alternative my mind could come up with, I've decided to seek out the experts.

All I'm trying to do is install a softmod through XboxHDM 1.9 and NDURE 3.1.
I don't have a USB drive (that works), so XHDM 2.X is out.
The Xbox itself has a busted DVD drive, so gamesave exploits are out.
Chipping is where I'll turn to if hotswap is absolutely destined to fail for me. I'd rather try to get this working first though as I already have all the materials to do this and chipping would just add unnecessary expenses.

So my setup is a 2 year old ASUS/ATI mobo with 1IDE/6SATA. I pulled an ancient Lite-On DVD-ROM out of a dinosaur (which I would just use that instead, were it not without a monitor or HDMI ports to hook up to my TV, or if at least one store in this entire city would carry a cheap VGA>HDMI cable. The world is against me on this one, if you haven't figured this out) and the dual IDE cable I just bought from Radioshack. The Xbox itself is a 4034 with a WD Protegé HDD (I find this one particularly tricky to unlock, compared to past experiences)

Problems:
Xplorer360: Windows will not detect the hard drive. No matter what. Never gonna find this drive. Probably mobo related. This method is out.
XboxHDM: Basically everything that could possibly go wrong. I sorted my way through all the common problems by searching the forums and now I'm stuck at things I'm pretty sure my computer made up on the fly to taunt me. All SATA drives are disconnected, the chain goes IDE->Lite-On Drive->Xbox HDD. Lite-On drive is primary slave. With the Xbox HDD, I've tried various jumper settings. Leaving the jumper off (Single master) got it to appear in the BIOS as Primary Master when locked and in XboxHDM as a locked drive, and the Xbox itself was still able to recognize it. From here, I should be good, right?
I start up the PC. Pause-break at the ASUS splash screen. Power on Xbox, unlock drive, connect to PC. Continue to boot options. Computer can no longer detect DVD-ROM drive. As soon as I hook on that unlocked drive, it's like they both just disappear. I tried going to the BIOS instead of boot menu and it shows two empty IDE slots.
So I start it up again, this time without the pause break. As it's booting, I unlock the drive. I wait until it gets to the XboxHDM first screen to connect the HDD. See photo for results:

Actually press the "a" key.
Computer reboots.
Boots into XboxHDM
"2"
Loading...
Found Xbox HDD
*LOCKED*
And I can't get any farther than this.

Additional info:
- I'm using the "Microsoft" logo in correspondence with the sounds the HDD makes to unlock it, as error 12 doesn't unlock it for me and with a busted disk drive I can't even test playing games or audio.
- Can still boot into vanilla MS Dash
- Xbox is very picky about what jumper settings it will unlock the HD on.
○○○○○ - Primary Master single, unlocks
○○○○▒ - Cable Select, Factory default, unlocks
○○▒○○ - Primary Master w/ Slave, ERROR
○○○▒○ - Slave. Error.
○▒○○○ - ?!?!?!?
▒○○○○ - PW2? Error.

UPDATE

I guess persistence pays off. I finally got the softmod setup and working. M$ Dash and shadowC aren't functioning at all, but I have UnleashX and that's really all I need for now. I'll focus on the rest when I've saved up enough money for an HDD upgrade.

As for what the issue was, I'm really not sure. I never did get XboxHDM to work. Xplorer360 just starting working out of the blue. At first, it tried to eat my Partition 4, and I had to rebuild the partition table with ldot's xboxdumper (which is a LIFESAVER for people with modern computers, I wish I could shake that guy's hand). This thread can now be disregarded. Might make a tutorial for recovering from missing partition 4's for people using Xplorer360 to softmod if I see that issue pop up again, since extensive searching just shows people who's threads were never answered.

you can now download hexen "heimdalls xbox engeneering disk"

the fact that you dont have a dvd drive means you will need to use the HDD veriosn i edited.
search for "hexen for hard disk drive not dvd"

so you would want to download that extract the folder from the rar file, and FTP it to E:
so you have E:\hexinst

Explore files. go to E:\hexinst then run default.xbe
When hexen has started go to file explorer a and delete everything from C
"DO NOT RESTART OR REBOOT"
go to E:\hexinst\stock files\C   and copy the contents of that folder to  C:
"DO NOT RESTART OR REBOOT"
now go to softmod tools and chose krazies ndure 1.1.1 exploit (sc) "pal or ntsc"
"DO NOT RESTART OR REBOOT"
follow all on screen instructions to back up the eeprom and install your softmod + dashboar
""DO NOT RESTART OR REBOOT, The xbox will automatically do that when done"

just follow the instructions and remove the dvd when prompted..

This will give you a MS dash back. unleash-x as your main dash, Give you an eeprom.bin back up "ftp the eeprom.bin to your pc"  and it will install and activate a shaddow C.

Sweet man! That's awesome! I'll do that in a little bit and report back on how it goes. I've already got my eeprom backed up by ftp'ing a crippled EvoX I found on my old desktop HD from 6 years ago into apps and running that default.xbe and I managed to get rid of shadowC by loading E:/ndts/default.xbe and erasing C via FTP and using the C from an outdated ready-made softmod. There's still lots of broken stuff though and your method will work wonders fixing all that. I had no idea anyone had made an HDD version!
