Hi guys,

I've got spare xbox laying around that doesnt get used so I figured I'd have a got at softmodding it and installing XBMC and use it in the bedroom for me and the missus to watch films on etc.

Can I use any hardrive and softmod it once I have a copy of the consoles eeprom providing the drive is lockable?

As long as the drive is lockable and is a Ide drive yes you can use it

Yes, any lockable hard drive will fit in. I usually use the Western Digital JB series of drives. I haven't found a Western Digital or Maxtor drive that didn't lock.

Stick with IDE. There are those that have had great success with SATA to IDE adapters, but I don't trust them.

cheers for the info do you know if a USB 2.0 to IDE adapter would be usable to do the mod as it will make life easier taking the laptop to the computer rather than tv/xbox or computer/monitor etc to the other.

You may be able to do that with the new Xboxhdm. You could also use Chimps to upgrade the HD with the Xbox.

I have never used anything but the PC and Xboxhdm.

The best option may be to soft mod it and then do a TSOP flash. Then you can put in the new HD and use Slayer's to prep it. Or a mod chip would do the same thing for $15.

I think it is 2.1. This allows for USB drives to be used instead of CDs, if you can boot from USB. It also allows the HD to be connected to any port, so it doesn't look for it only on primary IDE.

Any ideas where I can find xboxhdm 2.1 as the only one I can find is 1.9, Ive checked my friendly torrent site aswell as Xbins

Unless you're referring to the glove compartment in your Pontiac Torrent.

Ooops my bad.

Anyway iI got it sorted using XboxHDM1.9

I created the image, hotswapped the drive once unlocked and connected it with the USB adapter.

Once connected if you take a look in device manager under harddrives there will be a new drive as expected in the properies tab it gives the number of the hard drive in my instance it was 2

I then booted the XboxHDM image through Qemu in windows assigning PhysicalDrive2 as the Primary Master then ran the softmod as normal.

I unlocked using the error 12 method BTW.

I now have a very cheap media center sat in my bedroom
