I have rebuilt the hard drive from scratch again but this time after I formatted the drive (inc. extra F: ), I only copied files onto C: (and did not copy any of my data on to E: ).
It works perfectly. So whatever was on E: was causing the trouble. Can't explain what, it was a pretty standard softmod, maybe someone else here can.
