Im quite new to the xbox modding scene, but i believe the easiest way is to do the 007 game exploit.  

But theres always hot boxing - and using a usb (i believe)

lol hot boxing, dont think getting your harddrive stoned will work

if you got 1 of the exploitable games (i.e 007) and a mem card just softmod it otherewise look into hotswapping/installing a chip

i would go ahead and softmod the original hdd with Ndure using the gamesave exploit follow the onscreen directions. then use unleashx or evox dash (whichever you chose upon install, doesnt really matter) to ftp in and copy the C and E drive contents to your pc. then use xboxhdm2 to build your new drive on pc with the old drives files. your gonna need to lock it with your xboxes eeprom that you backed up during install. and then use xbpartitioner to format F and G drive with 32 kb clusters and then you can set up xbmc.
thats if you are using a 1tb hdd that is.
