Softmodded Xbox Stopped Playing Backups
« on: October 12, 2009, 12:19:00 AM »

hey guys i have a softmodded xbox that wont play backups anymore for some reason.  it plays originals fine, so i dont think its the laser thats gone bad.   when im in the ndure dash it just tries to read the disk and then says "unknown".  like it cant read it.  I tried 3-4 that use to play and still play on my other xbox but they dont work.   Do i have to FTP everything? I dont know why it suddenly stopped playing backups.  my nephews were usuing it and its possible that they messed up some files that are doing this? i dont know

any help would be appreciated.  Thanks for your time!!

what dashboard are you using? Ndure is not a dashboard, it's a softmod method.

If your dashboard has a file browser, try to browse your d drive. See if the contents of the disk in your dvd rom are readable that way. Another thing you can try is playing a music cd from the M$dash.

The ideal test to find out if the problem is related to your dvd drive, is simply switching the drive from the working and the non working xbox. If things work again after the switch, it's a problem with your drive.

regards.

Thanks for the reply obcd.

My dash name is called Unleash.  I tried using the file browser to to look at teh contects of the backups but it just said it was 0 kbs  so it didnt recognize the data.

I also tried playing a cd from the M$ dash and it worked fine.  I even played a dvd from XBMC and it worked fine as well.  and like I said before the original games play fine as well.  It is just teh backups that are not being recognized.  Does this rule out a problem with the laser?   I would rather not take apart the box because i dont have the tools easily accessable at this time, but i will borrow them if need be.

something tells me that something in the settings or something got tweaked?   do you have any idea what it could be? and how I can fix it?

Thanks again for your time!!

It has nothing to do with your settings. Xbox DVD drives are very picky, especially when it comes to burned DVDs, and it sounds as though yours doesn't want to read burned games any more.

As obcd suggested, switching drives is the simplest way to isolate the problem.

oh ok.  Thanks for the reply.  I will swap out the DVD drive to test it out as soon as i can borrow the tools.

In the meantime is there anything I can do to try to fix the issue if it isnt the the DVD drive that is the issue?

or is it pretty clear cut that the DVD drive is the problem.

Thanks again for the replies and your time.

It's the DVD drive. You could try using different media to burn your games - DVD-R, burn at 4x, try a few different brands, but there's no guarantee that it will resolve the problem. Alternatively, fit a larger hard drive and run the games from there.
