**urgent** Need To Fix My Softmod Gone Bad
« on: March 19, 2009, 12:40:00 PM »

I will apologize in advance because I may be including way too much info.

I recently tried to mod an xbox for my friend and everything was going great.  I used the hotswap/UDE method, because I didn't have any of the games needed for the gamesave exploit.  The exact tutorial I used can be found here: thestauths.com/xbox.pdf .  Everything went fine with that and it automatically installed Evox for me.  I then installed a few emulators thru FTP access, that all went well.  I then was asking on #fw what the best program was to play dvds on evox, so i didn't need the dvd kit.  I was told to use XBMC and replace Evox because it sucks, i agreed.

Here is where it all went bad, I FTPd to my xbox and uploaded the newest rls of XBMC in the E:/Dashboard folder, that previously held Evox.ini and default.xbe.  I replaced the default.xbe with the one for XBMC and then turned the xbox off and back on.  It goes thru the Xbox logo then it blinks XBMC logo for a split second then just goes to a black screen.  I cannot FTP to it now, and I tried going thru the UDE Hotswap again and it will not recognize my xbox HDD when I type "UDE".  I also tried burning Evox to a CD-RW but not sure I burned it right because that didn't work.  I will load games and play them, but there is no dash if there is no game in the drive.

I am not sure where to go from here, but I really want to fix it.  I have a modded xbox myself so that may help.  Please let me know what to try, and thank you for any help you can provide.

Dod you just copy the XBMC default.xbe across, or the whole of the XBMC folder? If you just copied the default.xbe then that's your problem - XBMC needs the whole of its directory structure to work.

You can put XBMC into error recovery mode by holding white and Y during startup, and that will give you ftp access. From there you can use ftp to repair your installation.

From there, you should consider upgrading your softmod to a newer and more stable NDURE one - the tutorial you used is REALLY old! CASH should allow you to do the upgrade relatively easily.

Yea I did upload everything.  I figured the install was really old, but it was very detailed and so I went with it.

So I will try the "white + Y" trick and hopefully that will work.

there you go. HARD mod, dont SOFTMOD.

you can relock a drive in 3 seconds.

also, your ftp server, though maybe not the strongest one, will not crap out on you beyond fixing with a hard mod like a softmod will.

sounds like you are in the same boat as me. tried to change dashes and the ftp server died on you.

SHOULD'VE gotten your EEPROM first.

now you need a chip to go get it.

Nonsense.

Softmods work perfectly well, and this has nothing to do with locking drives or eeproms at this stage, because the softmod (while very old) is working. It also has nothing to do with the FTP server. The Xbox is booting and loading XBMC, but the XBMC installation is corrupt so it isn't loading properly. White + Y will fire up XBMC in recovery mode and allow him to repair the installation.
