Upgrade Using Ndure 3.1 And Nothing Changes
« on: February 16, 2009, 01:32:00 PM »

Hi,

I have softmodded my XBOX long time ago using uxe-complete. I realize this has nkpatcher v10.

I like the flexibility of running homebrew with power button and ms dash with eject. So I decided to upgrade my box using Ndure 3.1 PC install (kudos for making this so easy..)

I selected the basic install and uploaded the files generated to the C & E drives. I had to overwrite just xboxdash.xbe during the upload.

After reset using Power or eject button I am going back to my old EvolutionX dash. I am guessing I would need to modify something else.

Questions:
- Is it possible I have upgraded the shadowed C directory? I have tried "Detach Virtual Disc" from EvolutionX menu and after reset I am seeing all the new files uploaded  in "C". So I do not believe this is the case but I don't know for sure.

- Do I need to follow more steps of patching EvolutionX files?

Really appreciate your help.

Cheers.

You need to change more than that! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It's likely that you have shadow C enabled, and you've put the new softmod files on the shadow C rather than the real C. Boot with Frosty's Rescue disc to be certain you've bypassed shadow C, then ftp the Kingroach files to your C and E partitions.

But first, if you want dual boot then you need to build a different Kingroach set - you want retail, not basic. The cleanest way is to start with a clean 5960 dash and follow the instructions in the Kingroach manual - particularly paragraphs 4 and 5. Then you delete the contents of your existing C and replace them with the new file set, and copy the Kingroach E files to your E.

Hi Heimdall,

Thanks for the tip. I certainly suspected it could be the shadowc but I didn't know how to check. I have used Frosty's rescue disc as you suggested.

Now I have uploaded the Ndure generated retail mode files. Here the procedure I followed.

1) Copied my backup original stock MS C drive files to  Ndure3.1-files\C subdirectory
2) Selected "Boot XBL dash with eject" in NDURE
3) Selected kernel version 5838 (that's the version my XBOX came with)

Emptied C and uploaded C and then copied E drive files.

Now reset puts me into UnleashX and eject puts me into MS DASH. So far so good but I am not sure if this is the correct and complete setup for dual boot. Couple of questions.

A) The C drive is empty once I am in UnleashX. Is this expected? I would have expected the shadowc.img to contain some files.   What files should I copy? The stock C drive that came with XBOX?

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) I have the Topspin game that came with the XBOX. If I insert the DVD once I am in the MS DASH it's cool. But if the DVD is in the tray while the system is coming up.. it gives a message that it is updating the XBOX Live and the update fails. After this, the eject always gives me the dreaded "21.. Service needed" message.  To recover from this, I had to redo the whole procedure from Frosty's disc.

I am actually surprised and impressed that UnleashX related files are not touched during that XBOX Live update from the Topspin DVD.  Is there a way to fix this?

I am giving this to my teenager nephew in another country and I would like to make this as fool proof as it can get. I can't control what games he would play and the order of the booting sequence.

Thanks.

Your process is absolutely fine, but it sounds as though your original MS Dash wasn't the latest version, which is why Topspin keeps updating it. Slayers and CASH both have the latest dashboard - get hold of one of those, and redo the process, and the problem should go away.

2) Selected "Boot XBL dash with eject" in NDURE
You don't normally want this option - the only option you need is the Kernel - 5838 in your case. If you do need the live dash for any reason you can toggle this option later, from within UnleashX.

Shadow C is empty by default. Once the softmod is built and you reboot, just ftp the stock C (from Slayers or CASH) across to the empty Shadow C. Your Xbox should then work normally - power will boot to UnleashX, you will have system sounds within UnleashX, you can get to MS Dash from the UnleashX Menu, and eject will boot to MS Dash.

No luck even with Slayer's MSDASH.  Same behavior (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

The only way I can play the TopSpin DVD is to run MSDASH from UnleashX and then insert the DVD.

Not sure how the TopSpin determines if an update is required. It seems as if Topspin is being run before the exploit got a chance to patch things if the DVD is already in the tray.

I ran into this thread http://forums.xbox-scene.com/lofiversion/i...hp/t532829.html through Google but it's not clear to me if Topspin can be run straight out of the DVD tray before reset.

Do you know if anybody has dual boot working with this Topspin? May be Topspin is doing something funky and it's an anamoly.

Thanks.

AFAIK Topspin is one of few games that does this..you can try to fill up th ereal Cdrive with some small files ( like 1MB) files. FTp in the xbox ( with shadowc disables and keep uploading small files to C:\shadow folder until you cant copy anymore.. The dash updater needs about 2MB of space to run.. You can also backup the topspin dvd and delete update.xbe from the root of the dvd and reburn the game.
