Softmoding New Hd
« on: February 13, 2009, 12:18:00 PM »

Hi All - newbie here to the forums.
I successfully softmoded two xbox's that I'm working on at the same time unlocking the drives with copied songs to the original drives. Using Ndure/xboxhd and getting XBMC booting as the default dash etc.

I then wanted to put bigger harddrives in both (80/320Gig). I successfully did this with both the new drives (locking them as instructed) and they boot up into the original xboxdash.xbe

Now question is how do I get these new drives to unlock and softmod them? I can't use the copy a song to the drive trick this time because the xbox dash tells me that I have excceded 100 song already and will not allow be to copy a track to the HD? So, can I unlock the drives with say option 3 using xboxhd and then somehow change the default xboxdash.ebe to the XBMC dash which I assume has been copied over when I build my CD using C: and E: drive data from the origial softmoded HD's.

Thanks for any pointers! And helping a newbie softmoder!   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

It sounds as though you've built the second disk with the C files from the shadow C rather than the real C from your original disk. Not a problem. I'm guessing that you have a copy of the eeprom, so just build a clean softmod file set (using the stock C from Slayers / CASH plus Kingroach NDURE 3.1) and use that to build a new xboxhdm CD.

Thanks Hemidall,
Can you point me to a readme on the Slayer / CASH - meanwhile I'll search this site.
Cheers!

CASH and Slayers both come with manuals - although you won't need them, you just need Qwix to extract the C files from the .iso.

Once again, thank you very much for the assistance!

OK one other quick question to clarify - on the origional Xbox drives I softmoded them using unleashX exploit. and then used these to get the info from C and E drives. I also backed up the eeprom's using unleashX. So does CASH or Slayer over ride unleashX or do I have to return my original softmoded drives back to standard?

Sorry for the newbie questions - just trying to save some reading time here...   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Thanks

Your large drives aren't currently softmodded at all. You've built them using the stock C files from the Shadow C on your original Xbox - that's why they boot to the original Xbox dash.

Just make a new xboxhdm disc as I described (one for each Xbox, with the appropriate eeprom.bin for each), and rebuild the disks. You don't need to touch the original disks at all.

And, again, you AREN'T USING SLAYERS OR CASH - you only need one of them to get the stock C files so you can build the new Kingroach softmod file set - paragraphs 4 and 5 of the Kingroach manual explain this.

OK I don't seem to be winning here (guess that's why I'm a newbie).

While I was waiting for the Slayer torrent to download I read another post you made in November that was a similar situation to mine http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=665601 So since I had time I thought I would try the Rescue Disk - when I copied over the C from that and made an ISO from it using Ndure 3.1 I got the Evox modded dash boot up.

Then I tried extracting the C files from Slayers and made an ISO from that. Now I'm back to the origional Xbox dash which is fine if I could get the drive to unlock.....

Ok just had a thought - I should unlock the new larger drives with xboxhd images using slayer C and the eeprom from each drive, then reboot using the original xboxhd iso that was softmodded. One more reboot with the slayer CD and lock the drive. Using this method I was able to get my 320G drive to boot up with unleashX I can now ftp into the box and add XBMC.

However using the same method with the other xbox that I wanted to add an 80Gig drive, I can unlock it but on the second boot with the original softmod xboxhd disk I get an 'invalid selection' when trying to rebuild disk from scratch. I'm thinking that maybe the drive is not actually unlocked. Oh and I am keeping the drives powered up with the xbox through each reboot of the PC.

Ideas - I'm close.     (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

You have two basic options when building a new disk with xboxhdm:

 - use Frosty's Rescue disc to get your real C and use that and your current E to build xboxhdm, giving you an identical copy of your original softmod
 - take the stock C files from Slayers / CASH, build a new Kingroach softmod top on of the stock C, then use the resulting Kingroach files to build xboxhdm, giving you a new, clean softmod. This is the best option if you aren't sure which softmod you used, or if you want to upgrade your softmod.

As you've discovered, the first one works fine, but you've only half done the second option - you used the stock C but without building the Kingroach files on top.

So, unlocking the drives and rebuilding as you describe will work fine, and you'll end up with an identical copy of your original softmod. You don't need to boot twice - you should be able to lock the hard disk with your original xboxhdm disc.

Not sure what the "invalid selection" error means - but try building a new xboxhdm boot disc, see if that fixes the problem.

Seems the 80Gig drive will not unlock - one of the messages says that Security Locked = Yes. I don't see this when I try other drives. I pulled out a 120Gig drive and thought I would put the slayer files on. Boot and IDE seek are quite slow on the PC using this drive as primary master but it all seemed to format fine. I thought I would at least get an xbox dash working out of it then exploit that once I had a know good starting point.

Except that when I fire it up in the xbox this drive sits there for a little bit at the Xbox bootup screen then continually reboots. I've tried different setting from Slave to Cable Select to no jumper and it either gives me the 'You Xbox needs service' message or it does the reboot thing.

I just can't get ahead with this dang system. Have to got to bed now but again thanks for any input. I'm temped to try yet another drive to see if it a hardware problem with this 120?

Fixed. The deal was - poor power supply on one of the xboxes. I tried another new 80Gig HD and my PC reported bad SMART immanent failure. The only common denominator was that I was powering up the drive using the xbox P2 connector. I switched xboxes and problem solved. The poor power supply box however boots up the new drive without issue.

Again thanks for all the help and feedback.
