Xboxhdm+ndure+unleashx And New Hdd N00b Question.
« on: October 13, 2008, 12:16:00 AM »

Sup,

I softmodded a few XBOX's using XboxHdm+Ndure+UnleashX with no troubles. I recently wanted to upgrade the HDD's to a pair of 80GB WD's I had laying around.

I did everything the tut said, made a new install cd with the eeprom and C/E backup in the ndure dir - every thing appeared to go smooth. It saw the backup files and copied them over after the fatX format. Locked the HDD and inserted it into the XBOX. No go.

So out of spite I tried the exact same thing without putting my C/E backups on the CD. Slapped it in and low and behold it worked like a charm.

Everything works fine, but what I'm wondering is do I really need what was on the C drive? Because when I FTP to the XBOX, I'm unable to write to the C drive. I've tried booting Evox DVD, XMBC, UnleashX and none of them will let me write to C. I Keep getting an error 426 "failed to open file".

I did both 80GB drives the same so they both have the same problem. I'm able to write to all of the other drives/folders - it's not an FTP thing. It's more like a permissions issue imo.

So do I really need to restore the C drive? If it's better to do so, how do I do it post install? Any tips on how to successfully restore C during install?

Thanks

when you backed up the c drive you must have for got to disable the shadowC

If you go to E:\ndts and select the default.xbe you will see the contents of the real C: but dont try and write to it or remove anything but the next time you make a disk use that C:\

I'm pretty new to this so if you could explain or at least point in the right direction as to why and how I could "disable the shadowC", I would appreciate it.

And your second comment is throwing me for a loop (me being tired isn't helping).

When you say "go to E:\ndts and select the default.xbe you will see the contents of the real C:" I'm assuming you mean on the original drive? Or do you mean run this xbe in the xbox like an app?

The contents of E:\ndts on the original HDD and on the new HDD without the backup appear to be identical.

E:\ndts:
files (dir various files/RAR's)
bios.bin
boot.cfg
Config.xml
confige.xml
default.xbe
English.xml
unleashx.xbe

This is was was on the original HD C drive:
Audio (dir with WAV's)
fonts (dir with XTF's)
xboxdashdata.185EAD00 (dir with XIP's)
xodash (dir with XBE/XBX/WAV's)
XBox Book.xtf
Xbox.xtf
xboxdash.xbe

This doesn't look anything like what's in "E:\ndts", I don't understand (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif).

The C Drive on my old HD had some files (listed above - presumably the MsDash?). The C drive on the new HDD is blank.

Does that mean there is no MsDash on the new drive? If so, will that pose a problem? If so, how do I copy what was on the og. HDD C drive to the new HDD C drive?

Thanks.

Ahh, the fog is starting to clear...

When I do what you said it shows (in the new HDD):
bios (dir with XBE)
media (dir with XBG/Other)
shadowc bios (dir with IMG/XBE)
xboxdashdata.17cdc100 (dir with XIP's)
xboxdashdata.185ead00 (dir with XIP)
xodash (dir with XIB/XTF's)
xb0xdash.xbe
xboxdash.xbe

The only difference between what's on the original and what's on the new is:
E:\backup\
Audio (dir with WAV's)
fonts (dir with XTF's)
xboxdashdata.185EAD00 (dir with XIP's)
xodash (dir with XBE/XBX/WAV's)
XBox Book.xtf
Xbox.xtf
xboxdash.xbe

Like what was on the original C: drive when booted normally.

I think it's setting in. So what you're saying is that I would need to do a re-install, only this time I would use the files from from C:/E:while using E:\ntds\default.xbe instead of just booting into unleashx like normal and backing up C:/E: to the ndure folder?

And by "disable the shadowC" do you mean leave that folder out?

I appreciate the help.

No, don't leave the shadowc folder out.

When the softmod is working, it hides the real C partition for the user and uses the so called shadowc. This is the shadowc.img file in the shadowc folder of your real C partition.

You will probably notice that on the new harddisks, the M$dash isn't working from within your Unleashx dashboard.

1. You can disable the shadowc by running the default.xbe in the e:\ndts folder. WHat you see than in your file explorer are the contents of the real C.

2. With the shadowc disabled, you can ftp the shadowc.img file from the shadowc folder to your pc.

3. If that file is read only, uncheck that read only attribute and ftp the file back to your xbox.

4. Reboot your xbox. Check that your C is still empty (you are seeing the shadowc). Format that empty C partition.

5. ftp the stock M$dash C files to your just formatted partition. You should be able to write to it now.

regards.

I can't thank you enough for walking me through this. I've managed to do everything else but the C: drive was really confusing me. I had been working on it all day and it was late, it just wasn't sinking in.

I backed up the real C:/E: and put it in "linux/C", "linux/E" and remade the iso. Installed in on a test HD and the MS Dash is there now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I'm going to try and restore the C drive alone for the HD's already in use, but if all else fails - I know now how to do it during install.

Just out of curiosity, would not having the MS dash cause any problems? I don't have any XBOX games (use it for XBMC), but I know if the power is disconnected for a long period of time - it boots into the MS dash so that the date can be entered.

I've been trying to get it to do it again with the new HDD and no MS dash, but it only seems to happen when I don't want it to. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Thanks again.

Ok, everything's in order now.

I set up the guinea pig drive exactly the same way as the 80GB's, so it would have the same problem - which it did. I tried to format C:, I hit the button - but it went back to the dash really fast like nothing happened.

I tried to ftp over some files and got the same error as before. Then I tried using the dash's file browser to copy the files over instead and got an "unable to copy file" error. When I ftp'd the shadowc file to my PC, the permissions looked ok.

So in the end, what I needed to do was:

Boot into E:\ntds\default.xbe. Ftp to the xbox and delete shadowc.img and then ftp the shadowc.img from the installer (same as cd) in it's place (fixes permission issue). Then I was able to write to the shadowc drive. I ftp'd over the dash and it works like a charm.

Now I'm not concerned when I have to leave it unplugged for awhile. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

And I also realize why the install didn't work when I copied the shadowc contents to /linux/C (which are the same files in ndure/C (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)) instead of the real C contents from the E:\ntds\default.xbe session.

Ahh, the forest through the trees.

Thanks again, there's no way I would have just stumbled onto that.

Xboxhdm+ndure+unleashx And New Hdd N00b Question.
« Reply #9 on: October 16, 2008, 12:51:00 AM »

I have one more question semi-related. Is it pretty easy to swap drives between xbox's with different kernels?

Reason being, I have 3 consoles and I have to give one away. Two have the same kernel, so I'd  prefer those to make life easy. Problem is they are all set up already, if it's a matter of re-installing - I'm not going to fret about it. But If I can just swap a few files around unlock/relock, done - I'll do it.

I'm weary about trying it out because, like I said - they're all set up and ready to go. They are all the same except for having different kernels (used same unleashx+ndure/xbmc/5960 dash on all).

As far as I can tell the only difference between the installers is:

/ndure/C/xodash/xbox.xtf and
/ndure/E/TDATA/fffe0000/music/ST.DB

Are different for each kernel. I tried it on a test drive by booting into E:\ntds\default.xbe and then ftp'ing over the kernel files of the xbox I wanted to put it into. It was late, but to my recollection it booted into the MS dash (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) instead of UnleashX. I probably did something wrong.

This is what I have in the order I received them:

Sys A:
K: 1.00.4034.01
80GB

Sys B:
K: 1.00.5101.01
80GB

Sys C:
K: 1.00.5101.01
200GB

What I would like to do is swap the drives in systems A and C. Then I'll keep C and B with the 80's and give my bro the 4034 with the 200GB drive.

Thanks

Hi,

changing the font should do the job. Just make sure that ernie.xtf is ftp'ed on the harddisk before xbox.xtf. If the bios loads them in an incorrect order, the softmod doesn't work.
Also make sure you change the font in the xodash folder and not the one in the fonts folder.
The audio exploit is only used as an emergency way to turn your softmod back on.
You could go to the ndts folder and run the default.xbe there. It allows you to switch your softmod to the generic kernel fonts. After you switched the disks, you can install the correct font again.

Use Ndure toolset to do the font change, e:\ndts\default.xbe.

Hi this is gonna sound completly noobish but i'm in desperate need of help.

On the unleashX dashboard it says mS Dash which I know means the original dashboard of an unmodded xbox. I have no clue where that file is or if it's even on my xbox, i made a copy of my friend's xbox and FTP'd it to my PC but Whenever i choose that option (MS DASH) The Xbox crashes and shows an Error 21. I was wondering if i could FTP the stock XboxDash.xbe back to my xbox and if so what directory. Should I disable shadowc by going to the E:\ndts ?

I know xboxdash.xbe is not kernel specific i just need to know what directory it goes in

Error 21 could mean other dash files are missing or corrupt, and not necessarily restricted to xboxdash.xbe. Have you backed up eeprom.bin to your PC?
