New Hard Drive Xbox Error 13
« on: September 30, 2008, 05:33:00 PM »

I'm going crazy now.  I softmodded a xbox using Krazy's NDure Mechassault softmod.  Worked great.  Yesterday I finished trying to hotswap out a new hard drive using chimp26.  It resulted in a error 5, then when I tried to undo it, metal from the hard drive touched metal from the case and the 200 GB drive fried.  I cancelled trying to do hot swapping as I decided it was too risky to redo.  So, I now have a 120 GB hard drive and I'm using the method found at the following link:  http://www.techfreaks.org/articles/modxbox2.shtml  it works great to make the disc, I copied over C (after going into professional mode), and E (although I had to delete the backup folder from E to get it to fit on a disc).  I just put it in the Xbox after locking  using the steps posted in the link, and I get an error 13.  I really don't know what to do at this point.  The drive shows as locking on the hard drive compatibility chart.  I have a xbox version 1.3.  The original hard drive still works in it no problem.  I have the jumper set to Master and I'm at a loss right now for what to do.  I did 5 in a row right (3-4 years ago) and now with updated tools I've messed two up in a row.  If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

One question, I don't know if it matters, when I copied eeprom.bin over from the xbox to the folder in xboxhdm, I used the one in the C:\ not the one in E:\...\backup (I can't remember the exact path to it).  Would this make a difference when the drive is made using the disc?

No issues with eeprom.bin, otherwise you hit an error 5 instead.

Error 13 is dash error, meaning you don't have a clean backup of your C drive or the xboxhdm iso C folder is missing some files from the backup. Ensure your xbox is plugged in, so that you don't get an error 16.

Do you have the original game disc you used to softmod?

Do you have clean msdash files , ver 5960 preferably?

You might want to also list the contents of C folder in the xboxhdm iso with pastebins.

I do have the original game I softmodded with.  And dashboard 5960 is what's installed on the original hard drive when I load it using the MS Dashboard option from EvolutionX.  I think I did the pastebin right, first time ever trying it.  Try this link to see if it's there:  http://pastebin.com/m1b63b288

This should show the directory structure of the "C" drive on the disc.  Thanks for your help on this, at least I know I'm not totally bonkers yet.

I was trying to compare the C drive listing with this: http://pastebin.com/f50eae434 which is the stock msdash 5960 files. Yours should be the superset. I can't tell what's wrong as the major files/folders all seem to be in place. Maybe you want to have a go yourself as well.

Alternatively place a fresh copy of the gamesave in UDATA folder of E folder of xboxhdm iso , C folder will have stock msdash 5960 files for your new hdd. If the new xbox boots up to msdash, you can softmod it with the game disc.

This is going to be a stupid question, but how do I setup a stock hard drive to install on C?  While I understand the concept behind what the softmod does, the details I'm not sure of.  I think the save file should still be on the E drive as I never removed it after modding, but I'm not sure how to use the stock C instead of the post-modded C.  I would be more than willing to remod it, but if you could help me out here, I think I may be ready to give it one more try.

Thanks!

Quick and dirty way if you don't need dual-boot feature: Copy the contents of C folder of Ndure folder to C folder of xboxhdm iso so you don't even need to run the ndure script via xbrowser. Likewise for E folder.

If you are certain your backup of msdash 5960 is clean (check against the pastebins listing), C folder of xboxhdm iso will contain those files.

Last resort will be the gamesave method. But you'll need a fresh copy of the gamesave as the original copy on E drive now in E folder of the iso will remember the softmodded status from the old hdd when the new hdd isn't modded yet. So get the fresh copy and deposit that in UDATA folder of E folder of the iso.

I think I'm screwed again.  I tried making a disc with the new C drive, but I don't know if it was from the lock or not, but the drive isn't being recognized by the boot disk.  The bios sees it's connected, Windows even acknowledged it's connected, but no matter what I try I can't access it.  I tried within Windows from a different machine, Windows shows it loads it, but it never shows up in the device manager to wipe.  When I plug it into Primary Master as the only hard drive and boot from the xboxhdm cd, no matter which option I pick, 1,3, or 4, it doesn't recognize a hard drive on primary master to unlock or install on.  The drive is definitely spinning and like I said the bios id's it, but something is just hosed so it can't be read.  I tried it on a Linux box, and I think it showed up as a SCSI device, although I know nothing about how to use Linux, yesterday was my first day installing it, so I take that for a grain of salt.  Any ideas on how I can even get to the point to test my new boot disk.  I also tried with the new and old disc that worked fine yesterday.  I'm willing to go with terminal commands, but I don't know where to begin to use terminal, although I am familiar with DOS.

I guess I can only edit a post once, but as a followup to my previous post, using Ubuntu I used the terminal, typed in sudo fdisk -l and it doesn't display the disk drive either.  But, like I said I can see it's recognized by the bios, but I can't do anything with it.

I can't get the drive to unlock.  I have the jumper set to master (I've also tried cable select just in case), and I have tried it on both slots of the ide cable and it just doesn't get recognized to unlock.  The bios even id's it as primary master.  But, when I go to unlock it, the tools come back and say there is no device found on primary master.

After 5 successful hard drive upgrades, I have now fried 2 in 2 days...LOL  (well one for sure, this one, I dunno)
