My plan is to put the 1.6 HDD in the modchipped xbox and boot slayers (or similar) burned onto cdrw.  That ought to give me ftp access to the 1.6 virgin HDD (I think).

That wont work because the HDD is still locked to the 1.6 xbox so it wont be able to boot in the modchipped xbox.

You can either A) put the modchip temporarily into the 1.6 and put the softmod files on, B ) use XboxHDM and hotswap to put the softmod on or C) use a save game exploit

I have a modchipped xbox v1.0 and an unmodded xbox v1.6.  I'd like to softmod the 1.6 using the easiest method possible.

My plan is to put the 1.6 HDD in the modchipped xbox and boot slayers (or similar) burned onto cdrw.  That ought to give me ftp access to the 1.6 virgin HDD (I think).

I'll then manually FTP the ndure-generated softmod files (/c/bios/*, /c/media/* /c/*, /e/*, etc) onto the virgin HDD.

After that, I think I should be able to put the virgin HDD back into the unmodded xbox, and the softmod should be complete.

You are mostly right, except to put the 1.6 hdd into the chipped xbox, you need to hotswap. Here's the guide:
