Error 6 Whilst Doing Softmod
« on: May 13, 2008, 02:12:00 AM »

Hi,

error 6 means that the harddisk is locked with a wrong password, or the password of another xbox.

Among the backup you made, do you have the eeprom.bin file for the xbox?

Since the xbox is giving you the error 6, hotswapping won't work anymore.
You will need to unlock the disk on your pc. If it was locked with xboxhdm, you could try the master password to unlock it.

How to proceed depends upon the fact if you will be able to unlock the harddisk and the fact that you have the xbox eeprom.bin or not.

regards.

Thanks obcd. I'm pretty sure I didn't manage to get the eeprom.bin because I only ran the backup tool in the ndure script, didn't manage to get access to the juicy stuff! How would I try unlocking the HDD with xboxhdm? I thought you needed an eeprom.bin file to do it

Hi,

if xboxhdm locked your harddisk, it also set a MASTER unlock password. That password is the same for every xbox. I think it is something like XBOXSCENE or so. I know you can find it in the xboxhdm manual.

if your harddisk is the xbox stock one, you might have a couple of other tricks to unlock it. Some of the unlocking tricks totally disable the harddisk security which means that it can't be locked anymore afterwards.
Those methods are only usefull if you want to use an xbox harddisk in a pc.

What is your harddisk brand and model?

The eeprom.bin is only usefull if the harddisk was locked with the correct password. Since in your case, the xbox is unable to unlock your harddisk, the eeprom.bin isn't usefull for unlocking. It is usefull if you wan't to lock another drive for that xbox.

regards.

I think it must have been xboxhdm that locked it during the hotswap, I think I may have knocked the power off the xbox whilst xboxhdm had access to the drive so I guess that's probably what caused it. It's just the stock hard drive, a Western Digital drive if I remember rightly (i'm at work and don't have my box on hand). I tried booting the xboxhdm disc into linux (option 3) and using unlock -p XBOXSCENE and it said it was too many bytes, but I could be trying to do the unlock wrong.

Hi again,

check this site for the WDC unlocking method.

http://www.llamma.com/xbox/

there is a master password like WDCWDCWDCWDC.......
I use the dos tools of a floppy when I manually insert an unlocking password. As long as you don't experiment with the locking tools, there is no danger.

good luck.

Thanks obcd I'll give it a try with WDCWDCWDC when I get in from work this evening, if it fails I'll just have to pick up a new set of internals

WDC... will wipe the hdd clean. Make sure you have working dash files either from slayer's or softmodded ones from kingroach ndure for the xboxhdm rebuild

surely then I'll run straight into error 5 when the xbox detects it's unlocked?

You are right so you need to build the eeprom reader since you don't have the eeprom backup in order to lock the hdd again.

It'll probably cost me the same as it would in parts

Parts cost can go down if you can recycle old stuff.

Like the lazy wuss I am I bought another xbox, slightly dodgy dvd drive so it 'sticks' but for £10 I'm not complaining. One frankenbox coming up this weekend I reckon, this time with hopefully less stupid mistakes from me!

Question though, I've seen on llama.com that you can 'fix' error 6 with another softmodded xbox, but I can't see anyone saying it's worked. Is it just a rumour?

Possible, by writing the eeprom contents onto the 2nd xbox temporarily. But it doesn't mean you don't need the spoilt xbox's eeprom.bin.

Hmmm. Might have a crack at building that EEPROM reader on pay-day, been a while since I had a hardware project, means I can justify buying myself a new soldering iron finally!
