No need to start a separate thread on this.

Anyway type dmesg at the prompt and post a picture of it. I have a feeling your hdd is physically damaged after too many attempts at hotswapping.

What you said makes sense. Zeroing the disk forces the drive to mark the bad sectors as bad and activates other sectors to compensate. Now please backup your eeprom asap so that if the drive should really fail in the future, you can always rebuild w/o a hotswap.
