Hi,

the reason you don't get an answer, is because it is hard to give one.

the only way to know for sure if your harddisk is defective is unlocking it and running some disk diagnostic tools on it.

To unlock the disk and to disable it's security (so that it stays unlocked) you will need to know the xbox eeprom contents.

The easiest ways to get those are by temporary installing a modchip or by building an eeprom reader.

Then its going to have to be an eeprom reader.

Ugh.

Right, so im going to follow this guide :

http://forums.afterd...view.cfm/357863

Am i correct in the quantities of each product I need:

2 x 5v Zenor Diodes
2 x 4k Ohm resistors
1 x 1 female 9 pin connector
Some insulating wire
1 x PCB board!?

Thing is, the post shows the radioshack numbers for the parts, but they dont post to the UK.

maplins supplies to the uk, but on searching their website for the parts i cannot find exactly the same ones....

Please confirm if the above is correct

Maplins = www.maplin.co.uk

Thanks in advance

Andy

Hi,

i prefer 3V3 zeners. The eeprom supply is only 3V3, so 3V3 should be better.

The resistors can be 3K3 and 1K in serie. This gives you 4K3 which should be close enough. You could even try 4K7 or 5K6.

I posted some notes about the eeprom reader in the original forum. It doesn't work on every comport...

Thing is, i only have the plan that was given in that thread, and thus I am not technical enough to know what to do in order to wire anything other than what he has drawn.

If i got the components I have mentioned and just fit together like he says to and the diagram shows, would it work on a comport that was supported?

Hi,

it is simply impossible to answer that question.

the RS232 specifications state that the voltage levels of the signals should be between -3 and - 12 and +3 to +12V. The 2 times 12V limit is why they refer to it as the V24 standard. The one situation is called MARK and the other is called SPACE.

This are the only 2 situations that are defined. The eeprom reader will output levels of 0.0 to 0.2V and 2.9 to 3.3V.

These voltages are in the twilight zone of the specifications. Some serial ports will still accept those levels as valid, and others will refuse to work. I have 2 pc's. One works perfect, but the other simply doesn't read a thing.

I hope this explanation was not to complicated. I shouldn't worry too much about it. I haven't read much threats yet of people reporting problems if they where sure they soldered everything fine.

regards.

I need this part:

http://www.radioshac...s...=2102845

Except they dont ship to the uk, so I am using this retailer:

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/

However im struggling to find a similar product here. Can you show me a product on the uk.rs-online site which is similar to the radioshack product so i can follow his schematic!

Hi,

the 206 - 8648 looks pretty much what you need. The individual holes are not connected to each other, but you can simply connect the wire ends. It is more expensive because it is bigger in size. I just did a search on "pcb prototype". They have plenty of choice, but that looked one of the cheapest. Just cut a piece of the board, the size you need.
