Smoking Hard Drive
« on: February 08, 2008, 10:38:00 PM »

I was up until 4 am trying my best to follow the Ndure softmod through XboxHDm an apparent simple tutorial. On my first hotswap attempt everything appeared to be fine, but I got all the way to installing Ndure and it would do step 1 it would find the back-up it would then go to step 2 and quickly state that it could not find necessary files and ask me if I wanted to continue. I would state yes and it would terminate the step. Needless, to say I turned everything off and turned the Xbox back on and get stuck at the M$ screen. I then attempted hotswapping a different hard drive and I had to remove it from the xbox becuase my IDE cable in the computer is real short. I propped the HD against my Xbox and this is where it got exciting. The Xbox suddenly powered off and my hard drive started billowing out smoke. I am very lucky that I did not set the house alarm off because it was that much smoke. How much damage do you think I did to the HD?  Xbox?

Could the problem with not getting Ndure installed be due to when I get to the step about "Installing the updated back up script" that I can only "save target as" which forces the doc to be a .htm or .txt?

Last question I have all of the gamesave exploit games and I was wondering which one was the easiest and where in the world the TUTs are for using them with Ndure 1.1.1  The package that I got on xbins has a readme about the installer but it skips over the process for transferring the exploit by stating the "usual ways." I am a total N00B and for me all of the ways are anything but "usual". Any and all help is appreciated. I look forward to having a modded Xbox sometime soon.

Any ideas on softmodding Xboxes that are malfunctioning (drive wont open, varios error codes, etc). I have 6 units right now with only one working without problems and I will be using it for my xecuter 3 ce project.

What about chipping xboxes that are malfunctioning. Which errors is it recommended or okay to do an install.
Any help will be great if I am not burnt to death in the mean time.

Hi,

chipping is fine for coma consoles as it overrides the xbox bios.
It can also work if a tsop flash failed.
If your xbox harddisk is no longer working, you can chip the xbox to have access to the eeprom contents.
If you erased your eeprom, you can chip the xbox with a bios that has an embedded eeprom in it's bios.

A modchip is not a magic device that cures every possible xbox error. If someone messed up the xbox with strange actions, or the xbox got messed up due to a power interruption, it can be effective.

If the xbox suddenly from one day to another stopped working, there is little change that a modchip will solve this issue.

Even if your harddisk started smoking, it probably still can be used as a doorstopper.

Serious now. You might try the xbox without harddisk and dvd first. If it boots into an error screen, that's a good sign that the mobo and supply are still ok. If you have something to check the supply voltages, you might do that to be sure. You can connect another xbox harddisk or a pc harddisk to that xbox (together with the dvdrom).

If you connected a locked xbox harddisk, the xbox should give you an error 6 screen.
If you conncted a pc harddisk that is unlocked, it should give you an error 5 screen.

The only exceptions to that are the 1.0 xboxes. They just show you the error screen without an error number.

If you get those errors, you will know that the xbox mobo is still capable of reading the harddisk. It means that you have 99.9% change that the xbox will work again with a good harddisk.

I prefer an eeprom reader to softmod a xbox. It allows to read the xbox eeprom chip. With the eeprom.bin file, you can unlock the harddisk without hotswap. You can use the xboxhdm package safely that way.

Just check out this tutorial:

You can do the same with a modchip and a package like the Slayers Rescue package. A modchip is still a bit more soldering work to install.

A gamesave exploit is only a good option if you have an original exploitable game. It will only work if you start with a working xbox.

regards.
