Error 8 During Softmod

I was softmoding my box using this method:

i got to the part of unlocking the drive and hot swaping it but wen i tryed to see it on the pc it said:

No xbox partition table found on /dev/hda

i figured that ment i hadnt unlocked it properly so i tryed again from the start but when rebooting my box i get an error 8. i found out this means the the board cant talk to the HDD n its probably due to the leads not being in right. ive checked all the leads and even tried a new ide cable and running the hdd off the pc power suply but still no joy. i can feel the hdd humming so i know its getting the power n ive checked the ide connection at the hdd the dvd and the board and its all in right.
If any one could help it'd be great coz i only got the damn thing 2day and havnt even played on it yet.
i thought i might hav fuct the hdd but i dont know how seeing as i cudnt even see it on my pc  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)
please help me
