Hdd Locked, Error 05, No Eeprom Help!
« on: February 02, 2020, 09:22:00 PM »

ok so i've softmodded 2 xbox's before no probs.....so im not completely useless.

my sister bought one coz i told her i'd mod it. i couldnt get the drive to unlock like it did on the previous 2 xbox's ive softmodded so i found this program that unlocks Seagate ST310211A 10GB harddrives via DOS by flashing the firmware, so i did that and used xbrowser to mod it etc and now it throws an error 05, which means the harddrive has not been locked.
i DONT have the eeprom.bin because it has never booted into evox properly (therefore i cant make backups)

is there ANY way i can lock my xbox's HDD without the eeprom...............or is there anyway i can find the HDD password to lock it up properly

i dont want to buy a modchip that i need to solder or one that will cost me more than the xbox already was. ($80 preowned)
i've read about eeprom readers but i dont know how to make them or solder. is there anywhere i can purchase one that will work without soldering

any advice is appreciated, hopefully this is easily (and cheaply) fixed

2 choices. Either a modchip (a cheap one shouldn't cost more then a couple of bucks nowadays) or an eeprom reader.
Are you aware of the search button?

Hi,

if you softmodded 2 xboxes before, than why are you using such a weird method to unlock the drive? The method of reflashing the drive is only used by people that don't have the corresponding xbox motherboard anymore. They usually want to use the disk for other purposes. I am even unsure if the drive is still lockable after the firmware update. Some articles say it is, and others that it isn't.

you will need the xbox eeprom contents (the eeprom.bin file) to lock the disk with the correct password. As was told, you can use a modchip to get access to it, or you can build an eeprom reader.

my usual method wasnt working on this one and so i found a program on llamma.com for unlocking xbox seagate harddrives, so i used it.........only to find my xbox didnt re-lock my drive after installing the evox dash with xboxhdm

does anyone on here sell eeprom readers? (hope thats not against the rules)
im not too experienced with a soldering iron or all those diodes and resistors and junk

also, is there a brute force way of locking hdd's?

No, there is no brute force way since the locking password must be the xbox password so that the xbox can unlock the harddisk at bootup.

The xbox never locks the harddisk by itself. It just unlocks the harddisk. After a reset or a power interruption, the harddisk is locked again automatically. You need to disable the harddisk security if you want it to stay unlocked.

yes, the reflash of the disk firmware unlocked the disk.

Maybe you used the hotswap method for your previous mod's. In that case, the xbox unlocks the harddisk after which you connect it to your pc. You alter all the necessairy stuff on it, and disconnect the power. It locks again upon disconnection of the power.

Your disk might still be lockable. You will simply need to try it out. You can use any password, as long as you remember it. If your xbox gives you an error 6 with the disk, it means that is locked. (With the wrong password)

If you can't lock it anymore, you have a great 8 - 10Gb spare pc harddisk.

You can always start over with a new lockable harddisk. Your problem will be the same:

You will need the eeprom contents for the correct password.

oh yeah i used the hotswap method the previous times, i just didnt time it right or did something wrong and couldnt get it to unlock, so i got frustrated and used that silly reflash thing

and when power disconnected it didnt lock it properly

.....bad idea

oh well, eeprom reader here i come.... so does anyone on here make them? i've just never done anything like that with electronics before. can i make one with a breadboard and that? i dont have a soldering iron nor would i know how to use one confidently

You brute force unlocked the hd. That is only for people with locked hd's that don't have the unlock code anymore. It's purpose is only to unlock. If you want it to relock you need your hd code which is in the eeprom.

this should help you.
Remember this is a softmod forum. If you want anymore help on building an eeprom reader take your business to the hardware forums.

Hi,

you can find tools to enable security again and lock a disk. Xboxhdm has those options and there are some dostools as well. (Atapwd.zip and hddunlock.zip)

Try those out. Simply use a password. If your xbox gives you an error 6 instead of an error 5, you will know that the disk is still lockable. In the other case, you will need to find yourself another 10Gb second hand lockable disk. Most pc disk's can be used for this purpose. A bigger disk is not a problem either. You just need to be sure it's lockable.

Sure you can lock your hd. It's just that without your unique hdpassword your xbox doesn't know how to unlock it so it's useless for your xbox now.

but with xboxhdm you only need the eeprom.bin in order to lock/unlock your hardrive right?

doesnt it calculate the password using the serials and such of your xbox and hdd as well as the contents of the eeprom.bin?

It uses the eeprom hddkey which is information that is stored in the xbox eeprom.
It also uses the harddisk model and serial number. Since the harddisk is connected to the pc,
it simply reads those from the disk itself. With this 3 parameters and a little bit of hash magic, it
calculates the password that is needed to lock the disk.
