Being a complete idiot, while softmodding my box on the original 8GB HD, I completely reformatted the drive with XboxHDM neglecting to back up my EEPROM.bin  

Now, since the drive is already locked, the soft mod (UnleashX/EvoX) works fine... however, I want to upgrade to an unlocked HD with much higher capacity.  And, of course, no EEPROM to lock it once it's been set up.  Now, my question is: how can the original (locked) HD function without the EEPROM?  Since it can, then why isn't there any way to lock the upgrade HD to work with my box?  Don't really feel like rigging up an EEPROM reader.  Isn't there some utility that can read information from the original HD that lets it run on the box?

EDIT: misunderstood your question

you can just use EvoX dash or Slayers EvoX and make a backup of your EEPROM and FTP it over to your computer. You can then use XboxHDM along with your EEPROM to build a new HDD and it locked with your eeprom.

Or, the easiest way to do it is to get a cheap modchip such as the duoX2 and put it in. With modchips it doesnt matter if the HDD is locked or unlocked...You can put in the new HDD and boot from Slayers and format it to XFAT (Xboxes file system)

Thank you for the response, but I fear that I deleted the EEPROM on the original HD, yet it is somehow still locked.  Is this possible?  Can the original HD (which is functional and soft modded on the box) be this way without the EEPROM?  Essentially... do I still have the EEPROM, because I know for sure that I ran the "xboxhd" utility and completely reformatted without making any sort of backup.

The eeprom isnt on the hard drive, its on the motherboard.

the eeprom.bin on your HDD is just a backup of it so you can transfer it to your computer for safe keeping. If the xbox still works all you have to do is load up slayers or EvoX dash and choose the backup option to get the eeprom.bin again

i backed up my eeprom with config magic and with evox.  then i looked at them and there are two different eeproms from the same box.  being an idiot i over rote the eeprom with a blank one then found out i had two different ones.  does it matter which one i put back into it, beiings they both came from the same box.  don't ask me how it happend but it did.  any help??

Hehe, I know the EEPROM isn't on the HD.  

But, nonetheless, I forgot to turn on hidden folder viewing in FTP, and eventually found the copy of my EEPROM on the original HD.  All is well.
