Hi,
you can indeed perform a softmod by copiing some files on the harddrive.
You will need the xboxhdm package to partition and format the harddisk so that it is recognised by the xbox. You will also need the Kingroach Ndure 3.1 package.
A normal xbox bios only boots when it's harddisk is locked. So, you will need to lock the disk with the password the xbox will use to unlock it. You will need to know the xbox eeprom contents to obtain this. There are several ways to get this information. (The eeprom.bin file 256 bytes long)
1. You can perform a hotswap with the original xbox disk.
2. You can build a eeprom reader.
3. You can temporary install a modchip.
Option 1 is the cheapest. You don't need additional hardware for it. The harddisk ata interface was never designed for hotswapping, so, you can damage your pc, your disk and your xbox.
As you can notice, I am not much a fan of hotswapping.
Option 2 is my preferrable way of doing it. You only need 3 connections to the xbox mobo, and they are all 3 on holes of the LPC header, so, fairly easy to solder.
