Xbox Won't Read Backups Or Originals, But Dvds Ok - Softmodded

Hi, my friend's xbox is no longer reading backups or original xbox games.  It looks as if it's about to load, then goes back the evo dashboard.   It plays dvd movies fine though.  It's softmodded, with evox dashboard.  We tried:

- clearing the cache
- in game reset set to no

We didnt bother trying to patch games, cause it use to work fine....so we know it's not the games....we tried a whole bunch of games (both backup and originals), but still the same issue....can anyone point us in the right direction?

On another note, when I try to play GTA: San Andreas backup, by putting it into the xbox after i turn it on, it doesn't work....just goes back to the main menu.  If i turn on the xbox with the game inside already, it will autostart to the game, and works fine....any ideas?  (did clear my cache and ingame reset set to no).  My original GTA: SanAndreas works fine..
