Max Hd Size For Ndure Softmod?
« on: October 13, 2007, 05:25:00 PM »

I'm having trouble finding a definitive answer on the maximum size of HD that can be used to replace the one in the XBox if you are using NDure to softmod it. It'd be great if somebody could answer the following questions:

Can I use a 500GB drive?

If so would I be able to access all of the capacity on the drive or is there some artificial limit due to the filesystem?

Does anybody have any recomendations for 500GB drives that they know will work with the xbox?

Thanks for the reply, do you know of a tutorial on how to use the NDure softmod/xboxhdm/xbpartitioner with a large HD?

BTW I'm not bothered about splitting up the space into multiple small partitions (F, G, H, I, etc.), would that be possible? Would it make the process easier?

easy, setup as usual, default is .67 (F:\ and G:\) for NDURE 3.1
boot dash, format F:\
add xbpartitioner as a app and format G:\ (it will use 32K clusters)
done..

F:\ and G:\ is all you can get (F:\ 123 gig, G:\ 370 something gig)
don't try to split the space, it will fail..

Im actually trying to do just that and not much luck so far. Im building the drive from scratch using xboxhdm and ndure. Not sure what Im doing wrong. Im following textbooks guide but its more for a retail drive not a large drive. I got it to work no problem on the retail drive but I keep getting error 6 on the xbox with the 500gb.

6 - kernel - Cannot unlock HDD

If you understand the above, you should be able to understand what this means. It means you are trying to boot up the xbox with an harddisk that is locked in combination with ANOTHER motherboard than you are using it with right now.

What can i do about it, you ask? Well place the harddisk back in the xbox where it came from. After that, UNLOCK the harddisk with the same procedure i explained above (see error 5). Now when the harddisk is UNLOCKED, put it in the xbox which gave you the error. Now when you boot up with the chip ON it should not give you an error anymore.

However when you put the xbox on with the chip OFF your xbox will give you an error. (error 5) So to make sure you can boot original and boot with the chip ON. Next do the same as above: "Boot up your xbox with the chip on. Preferrably with a slayer evo-x cd. Now you choose "Eeprom management." Than you choose: "Lock hdd." It takes one second. After its ready it should say something like "Done"
When it is ready just turn off your xbox. Disable your chip and try to boot original. Now there should be no more error.

Just wanted to ask for help, because you guys are obviously experts, I guess

So I tried to install a new 30gb hd on the xbox..
i used the method where you have to make a cd with the backup of the ftps files off of the softmodded xbox..so yes i did that......I made the cd
I followed the steps and started from scratch and got to the end...fine...
but when I plugged the new hd into the xbox...it loaded orignal MS dash....

Does that mean I can now Install the softmod on the new hd...?

help... sad.gif

try setting the correct time in dashboard and restart.. if it still boots to msdash then it means you just copied stock files from shadowc.. Just softmod it again.. Since you have the eeprom , you can unlock the harddrive, softmod and relock.. no need for hotswap..

its where the evox app is located.. and its in your linux cd's "eeprom" folder..to unlock the harddrive, go to option "3" and type unlockhd -a.. and lock it using lockhd -a.
