Cannot Access Hard Drive
« on: September 17, 2007, 01:47:00 AM »

Hi,

how is your cdrom connected in your pc?

did you try to disable the hdd auto detection in the pc bios before the hotswap attempt.

the dash version is not the one you need to know when you install a 'kernel specific" softmod. You need to know the kernel version. You should have the dash version you mention on your drive, so that's ok.

You shouldn't think about what xbox version you have. (Leave the thinking to the horses, they have a bigger head for that). There are plenty of tutorials on the internet that describe how to figure out your xbox version.

Microsoft has changed the moments the harddisk stays unlocked on a 1.6 xbox. Some pc's don't like it all when you try to hotswap. It's not an exact science.

regards.

I'm having the same problem and have checked everything, the xbox hd is primary master the dvd drive is secondary master and thats all on the ide cables. I've paused a song playing from the hd, switched at error 12, and even hooked the xbox hd up to my pc and restarted it just to see if xboxhdm would detect it and still nothing.  Is there a bios setting I should turn off or somthing ? I'm using a Gateway E-2000 if that helps.

obcd: The CD Rom is connected to the Secondary Master. The Hard Drive is the only thing on the primary IDE channel.

I cannot disable the HD Auto detection in the BIOS because then the computer will not see the hard drive because the IDE channel would be off. The only two options on a Dell are AUTO/OFF

Hi,

I would give it a try with the hdd auto detection set to off. I don't think the bios will disable the ide port.
Are you sure that you can't select a harddisk type on the first screen of your bios setup. (The screen that also has the clock settings.) Normally you have another setting somewhere in the advanced chipset setup to disable your primary and (or) secundary ide controller.

I am not a big expert in hotswapping techniques. I build myself a xbox eeprom reader so that I can connect the xbox disk safely to the pc (with the power switched off.) It's not so difficult to build, just a couple of resistors and zener diodes. You can use some dos tools to unlock the harddisk. I am not sure if your pc would allow to unlock the harddisk in dos.

If I would stand in your situation, and I wouldn't have another brand of pc to test it again, it is the way I would proceed. Just take a look at it and see for yourself.
