Softmod Help
« on: August 03, 2007, 12:23:00 AM »

I am trying to softmod a couple of xbox's.

All the tutorials seem to be out of date. What I am looking for is a one size fits all tutorial, noting I have not done a softmod before. I do however have a softmodded xbox, but the guy that did the softmod did not leave the exploit on the hard drive..

can someone help me?

Hi,

first of all, you will need to decide how you will do the softmod.

1. A exploitable game and a action replay card (or a working USB stick and a interface cable gameport - USB)

2. The hotswap method.

3. Building a eeprom reader or temporary installing a modchip to extract the xbox eeprom contents.

There are complete topics covering every method. The result after the softmod is basically the same.

I prefer method 3 since I don't have a exploitable game. The hotswap methods has some risks involved. If it didn't succeed, there is a change you will need method 3 to get things working again.

You might check what stuff you need and decide which method you will follow.

regards.

Ok. I tried to build a usb adapter so I could do the game exploit but for some reason it kept showing up with errors when trying to copy it onto the usb drive (AR wouldn't accept it either).

Anyway. I did the hot swap method and successfully modded 4 xboxs. However while installing xbmc and the shortcut to it on one of the xbox's I accidentally pulled the power on the xbox. This left me with an xbox that would not boot up into unleash via the power button, would boot into the live connection screen via the eject button, would play games and would not load slayers disc.

So I tried to hotswap it again. I inserted a Splinter Cell, played a bit then hot swapped. Came up with an error saying that there is no drive or no partitions.

I then tried to hotswap it by unplugging the dvd drive. This time it saw the drive in xboxhd but disabled some of the options (IE all the useful ones)

So what are my options? Have I just destroyed an xbox?

I fixed it.
I managed to get the hard drive unlocked by unplugging it just as the microsoft logo showed on the boot screen. I then loaded the ndure script, restored the C drive and then reinstalled the ndure script.

2 questions though

I setup ndure so that when I booted via the eject button it loaded the live screen. Can I change this by ftp without hotswapping them.

Where is the eeprom located on the drives? I want to be able to back this up so if something happens to the hard drives (xbox's will be on a boat) I can build them again using a new hdd. Do I need to backup anything else?

Cheers
Matt

Hi,

you can change the startup behavour with the eject button. Look for a small file on the root of your E partition (I believe it is called boot.bin). If you delete that file, it will boot the M$dash when you power the xbox with the eject button. If you want to boot something else, you will need to adapt the nkpatcher and recompile it.

You can backup the eeprom with the evox dashboard backup feature. You should find it afterwards in the e:\backup folder. The kingroach Ndure package can install evox on the e partition for that purpose.

It's always good to have a copy of a standard M$dash. (C and E partition). You can extract them from a Slayers Rescue disk package. The eeprom.bin is the key to unlock your harddisk. That's the most important thing to have backupped. It allows you to create a new harddisk from scratch, without hotswapping.

regards.

I found boot1.bin and renamed it to boot.bin, however it still boots to the ms live dash if I use the eject button
