Need Some Help With A Softmod
« on: July 20, 2007, 09:00:00 PM »

Hi, I'm looking for some help with doing a softmod to my xbox.

First I should say that my xbox is older version I think it's like either v1.0 or 1.1, don't quite remember for sure as I write this. I have no other mods, chips, or ect...
One problem I do have is that my DVD drive is busted, so I know I'm limited to doing a hotswap with my PC. The dvd drive is still detected, and the xbox still boots normally, the problem is that the laser part that reads the disks broke. The drive opens, closes, is detected by the xbox, it just won't read anything.

So, I'm planning on using XBOXHDM and hot swapping the xbox hard drive into my PC, and have been reading up on how to do that and I'm hitting my information overload point and my brain quitting on me  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
It doesn't sound all too difficult, as I'm fairly comfortable tearing things apart and tinkering around... My main problem is I don't quite understand how to get a backup of my eeprom file. Since I never actually used XBOXHDM, I don't want to get part way into the mod only to find I'm screwed because I don't have my eeprom yet.

That all leads me to a few questions I have about doing the softmod:
1) Of the various ways to do a softmod, I'm planning on doing it all by a hotswap with my PC.
Will I be able to complete the whole mod with just hotswapping, or do I need to use a memory card/action replay/ect to transfer some exploit files, or am I just out of luck completely because of my inability to read disks from my DVD drive?

2) About the eeprom file... Will XBOXHDM take me through the process of creating that backup to like a floppy drive or something? Or do I have to do something else that I've missed I need to do to get the backup? Like I said before, I don't have any other mods, so I don't have an evox dashboard to do a backup before doing anything else.

3) My goal of this little project is that I basically want to add some emulators & roms to play on my xbox. Then being able to play some of my xbox games from the HD would just be an added bonus pending available storage space.
Should I add the emulators, roms, and games to the XBOXHDM .iso I eventually make, or will I be able to just FTP the files to the modded xbox from my PC when I'm done with the mod?

I think that's about it for now...
Any help and input will be appreciated, and thanks in advance!

If you use the hotswap method you wont need a DVD drive that reads discs since its your PC cdrom drive that you use. With a hotswap you'll need nothing else but your xbox and pc.

Just read this guide and follow each step and you'll be fine:

I used that guide and have softmodded about 8 boxes in the past couple weeks with no issue.
Also, after the softmod you can just FTP your emulators and such.

Thanks for the link to that guide... I skimmed through it a bit and it seems to be a little more noob friendly than what I found. I will read it better and probably try my luck out tonight  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

I'm happy to say I've successfully modded my xbox  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Now I've just got one last stupid noob question:
Right not I have my hdd info (serial number, HDD Key, ect) all written down but I'd like to backup my eeprom file for when/if I decide to upgrade to a bigger hdd but I can't seem to find where to do it. When I installed the mod, it installed the UnleashX dashboard... Can the backup be done using Unleash, or do I have to install a seperate app like ConfigMagic (or another app)?
