Softmod Methods Requirement - Region Invalid Game/box?
« on: June 14, 2007, 02:55:00 AM »

Hi,

the region information is kept in your xbox Eeprom.
You can only change that with some homebrew software if you have a softmodded xbox or a modchip.

So, you have a couple of options.

1. Get a modchip so that you can do a softmod. You don't need one permanently. You can remove it when the softmod is installed.

2. Do a hotswap with your disk. With this method, you let the xbox unlock it's harddisk. You connect that temporary unlocked harddisk to your pc and you install a softmod on it. This method can damage your harddisk, your mobo and your pc as you have to disconnect the xbox ide cable and connect the pc ide cable with the power on. None of those are designed to do this.

3. Buy or build a eeprom reader. With this, you can read and even reprogram your xbox Eeprom. If you have your Eeprom.bin contents, you can use the Xboxhdm pc package to install your softmod. You could also change your region information and proceed the softmod with the games. The pc liveinfo package is what I would recommend to change Eeprom contents. Make sure you have a backup of your original eeprom contents before you change something.

Here's an easier way:

Get yourself a Japanese copy of Mechassault.  I live in Japan and I mod both systems, so I have a copy of both the US ver and the Japanese version.  Works like a charm.

Try PlayAsia and see if they have one. (oops..  I just checked.  they're out)

Here's a link to a yahoo auction that's selling the original Splinter Cell.  I understand there's an exploit for this game as well: http://page11.auctio...ction/n51461021

*edit*
Even better, here's Japanese copy of Mechassault for $25: http://page7.auction...ction/g56102571
or, you could get MA 1&2 for ~$45: http://page18.auctio...uction/w6873223

Happy modding!

Obcd and darmodem,

Thank you for your suggestion.

It sounds the (1) not what I want and (2) and (3) are very complicated; especial the (3) to build the reader that may need a PhD degree of engineer.  I wonder if there is another way to boot the xbox system in the mode to change the region selection, then make the selection and load the region's disk to the Xbox.   Does anyone know the itools or/and configmegic can perform this task?

Also, ordering a Japanese copy of the games sounds very reluctant.  I wonder whether an ISO copy the games with modified can allow the NSTC-J xbox to boot normal NTSC games?

You NEED a JAP version of the game, there is NO Magic Disc/trick that will get it to run an NTSC game when it is not the correct region.
