Christmas Lights Repair...
« on: November 21, 2006, 11:24:00 PM »

I have a 1.1 unit that was previously modded using spiderchip, it would boot to the M$ dash, but then would die and present the needs service screen without any number (ie. older dash running).

To top it off, no eeprom image of the unit,

I made a cable and saved my eeprom.

I was able to see the drive using xbrowser from a recovery cd, hence the drive was unlocked and not by me.

I thought this would be the culprit fo rhte problem.

Using the xboxhdm CD, I was abel to re-create the HD(80GB) from scratch and lock the unit.

Place hte unit back in, still has christmas lights?

What are some possibel next steps?

Do I need to try and place an older dash on the unit?

Thanks in advance

Yes the problem is that a softmod still needs the xbox to boot retail. It patches afterwards when the dash is run.

Those spider chips seem to kill the D0 point, I have repaired a couple of boxes with the chrstmas light problem by using heated windscreen repair paint (conductive paint) which I applied very carefully with a needle to the D0 point (fill the tiny hole).

THanks for the reply. I should have made things clearer (it was 2 AM wink.gif)

I removed the Spiderchip. It was POGO pins and 1 solder point. Desoldered that point and removed.

1. Are there any traces that need to be repaired?

Recreated the HD, and copied the stock C and E files from CashV1.1 CD to the C & E of the XBOX.

Softmodded the box using the NDure and XboxHDM CD (with backup of C - which was CashV1.1 C drive).

From that, I assume that the retail M$ dash is installed.

2. Am I wrong here?

3. As for the D0 point, what is it??? I searched for info on spiderchip and did not find anything.

Thanks in advance wink.gif

P.S. Read about the D0 point.

1. I don't know what you mean by the spiderchip kills the D0 point?

2. I can look with a magnifying glass (or ohm meter ) to see is the pcb hole is connected to the thru hole.

3. How did you perform your repair? Solder a small wire inth thru hole and then to the trace?

Anyone other suggestions?

Sorry my last answer wasn't exactly in line with you're original post. But I believe the 'spider' solderless chip has damaged the D0 point... though as you have attained it's not the only culprit capable of causing the error.

The Christmas tree error as you probably know is due to the xbox being unable to load the bios. This happens quite often with solderless chips as appaerntly the 'leg' that connects the D0 point wears the connection and continuity is lost.

Note.. i have never even seen a pic of a 'spider' chip or other solderless solutions, but have only witnessed the after effects. The D0 point (tiny hole) looks worn with no metallic ring around it, as I already said I repaired them by using conductive paint applied with a small sewing needle (all I had to hand)... as soon as I done this the boxes booted back to life. The same could be done with solder, but I wouldn't like to try.. my hands are too shakey, with the paint I can always rub the paint off if I miss wink.gif  .

So definately check the points where the spider chip connected for signs of wear.

THanks

I hope you're right.

I'll try my options. If it's a case of D0 not being in tact there are 2 ways to repair.

1. Fill the thruhole (via) with solder, but if the hole was damaged It may not be a 100% fix.

or

2. I can connect a wire from the D0 top side to the D0 bottom side locations. THis will guarantee the connection as long as the multilayer pcb does not rely on any otherlayers connecting to this via.

Another question, I thought the M$ BIOS was loading since the XBOX blob screen starts and ends with the XBOX logo, then the YOu need service screen?

BTW, here's some pics, It may help some others when I get this fixed wink.gif

If the repair of D0 is the only issue, I won't bother with the modchip installation.

If that doesn't fix it I'll be installing the chip with a 11 pin header on the LPC and go from theere.

Stay tuned !

OK, well it's not D0.

I am going to fix it without the mod chip.

I checked for continuity from the top side to bottom side and all is fine. I even made sure along the trace on teh top side to see if it was possibly cut, but no such thing.

So, continuioty and D0 are fine.

Issue here is that I do not get an error number with the unit.

I've also tried to use another working DVD player in the unit, but still FRAGS with service screen.

Anyone have any suggestions ?

OK, So I believe I've nailed down the culprit.

It looks like the HDD is unlockable using my approach.

I have locked & unlocked the drive with "lockhd -p" & "unlockhd -p" using the command line, but when I place the HD in the XBOX, it reports it cannot unlock the drive.

The method I'm using is I backed up an eeprom using ponyprog, then read it with LiveInfo. Using the "Unique HDD Key:" will allow me to lock but not allow the XBOX to unlock.

LockHD actually adds 32 0 (zeros) to the end of my unique key, which I presume is the problem.

1. How do I formulate the password from the LiveInfo data? According to a Llama tutorial it is just the "Unique HDD Key:" data. But that does not seem to be the case.

Second, I have used the xboxhdm rescue CD, I have copied the eeprom to the EEPROM folder. But when I boot to option "3" with lock and unlock utilities, I cannot see those directories.

2. Do I need to mount the directories somehow, if so how?

3. Do I need to mount the CD? If so, how?

4. I've tried supplying the path, but to no avail.

P.S. I do not have a floppy, I want to do it via the CD, since it says it's possible.

Thanks

Done Deal. wink.gif

Thanks for your help jonels !!!

Problem was with the locking of the HD.

Using, the LiveInfo tool, allowed me to get the "Calculated Password" which I then used to lock the drive with the XBOXHDM CD (lockhd -p XXX...).

Awesome experience, up 'til 2AM 4 nights straight !!! but well worth it.
