Hesitant About Updating To Dashboard Version 5960
« on: May 20, 2006, 12:55:00 AM »

I'd like to update to 5960 before installing Ndure. I've read that all I need to do is click on the Live tab on a recent game. However, I'm a little hesitant. I'm currently running a Matrix chip with Evox, stock hard drive. My C Folder contains files named xboxdash.xbe and msxboxdash.xbe. Some time ago I remember reading that I shouldn't click on any of the Live options on games as it could mess up my xbox configuration and would cause problems. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanx for the help.

Just run a new Xbox game and it will update the dash for you.

So there's really no danger here?

No. The only ppl that should worry are the ppl running an extreamly old softmod that requires 4920. Because when they update that erases there C drive and scraps there softmod and messes it up. But you have a chip and have absolutely NO NEED TO WORRY.

You sure u have a modchip? Ive seen lots of guys who say they got a modchip installed by a friend of a friend and those supposed modchips are just softmods.

He seemed pretty certain as he had the brand of chip and everything.

If your worried about messing up your drive create a bootdisc or get hold of Slayers or AID, make sure that your xbox will load the boot disc from cold boot AND make sure you can access it from FTP.

By the look of the filenames it seems like xboxdash.xbe if EVOX and msxboxdash.xbe is your 4920 MS Dashboard... this could be confirmed through FTP, check the filesize of the xboxdash.xbe file, if it's 752K then it is EVOX. Once you have confirmed that the xbox is configured that way (AND ensured you have a back door in through a COLD BOOTED boot disc) then change the names around. Then the Xbox Live updater should work fine.

Thanx a lot for all the replies.
The sizes of the files are as follows :
 xboxdash.xbe - 648kb
 msxboxdash.xbe - 1362kb
I think my dash as well as my evox version are very old.(Perhaps the file size is smaller on older evox?)
Anyway, do I understand that I need to switch those file names before I update dash through the Live tab on a new game?

{= That is indeed an old evoX and the MS dash is a pre-live version. =}

spidey97504, I'm curious ... why are you planning to install Ndure, even though you have a modchip already?

Well, my chip is starting to wig out a little bit. I believe it's just not seated very well. So now, sometimes on boot up, I get the blinking red light. Then, If I rattle the box a bit then reboot, I'm OK. So anyway I thought I might give the softmod a try.
Do you think this is going to be a difficult mod for me because of my current configuration?

That's good reason for sure!  The following thread was for similar (and the link I posted in it might be of interest too):
