I found the best way to get an error 12 is unplug the DVD power cord, then boot up... I always got error 12 doing this...  Hope it helps...

how do you get to the dashboard to do the audio method after you get an error 12 with the dvd disconnected?
or is there a diff way to unlock after the error 12 message?

The error 12 should unlock the drive.... as soon as it goes to error 12 and/or the red flashing LED pull the IDE and swap... it worked for me everytime...

I have a similar problem, I get myself an error 12 and then do the hotswap.  Then go into xboxhdm and type xbrowser.  Then xboxhdm outputs something like this.

"Searching for CD-ROM on HDA"
"Searching for CD-ROM on HDB"
"Searching for CD-ROM on HDC"
"No harddrive found" (or something like this)
"Now searching for harddrive on /dev/hda"
"No xbox partition table found on /dev/hda"

Wth is this?  Is this also b/c my hdd isnt unlocked, b/c i have tried everything suggested here to get it to unlock but i get this every time.

Are you disconnecting the HDD's IDE cable out in one swift motion? You cant do it from one side, you have to pull ALL 40 pins at the same time.

easiest way i found to unlock the drive is to disconnect the ribbon from the dvd player and also its power cable.

use a molex from your pc to power the xbox HDD.

now boot the pc into xboxhdm and turn on the xbox.

once the xbox has booted it will give you the "xbox needs service" screen, when this shows up you need to swap ata cables.

dont do it like the tut suggests as i tried all ways mentioned and it just would not unlock, my way unlocks first time everytime.
