Xbox To Xbox Hotswap - Bricked
« on: March 25, 2006, 12:14:00 AM »

Any tips?

I followed Rocky's guide, but after doing the swap, I went to look at the C: dirve of the unmoded xbox, and it looked just like the C: drive of the moded box.

I assumed that it must have just not refreashed, so I copied the files over anyway.  Now I get the "Send your Xbox in for servece" warning.

I tried the hotswap a few more times, (but waiting till the warning screen was back), and then the C: drive appeared to be a mixture of the two drives.  It had the files that I had copied (Phenox loader, and ernie and bert), but also had my xbmc.ini files from my moded box.

I guess when I get the time, I will try the hotswap agian, but make sure to disconnect the IDE cable before the error message appears.

OK, I was using what was available from the "Tutorials" on the main page.  I guess you are suggesting I use the guide in your sig.?

OK, so now I tried using DaddyJ's guide.  I got the linux distro to see the xbox drive unlocked, but xbrowser would not work.  It said something about no harddrive.  xboxhd worked though.  When I tried to do Option 2 (Rebuid C Partition), it said that there was no fatx partition table.  So I tried Option 1.  That just sat there saying press any key to abort operation.  I left it for an hour or so, but it did nothing.

Am I hosed?  Should I just buying a mod chip, and be done with it?

The Xbox harddrive was on the primary master (with no other harddrives attached), and xboxhd said that the drive was unlocked.

It took me several tries to get xboxhd to say that the drive was unlocked.  Several times it said that the drive was locked, then finaly I got it to say that it was unlocked, so I am fairly sure that it was unlocked, but who knows, maybe it was locked.

That's it.  I think I am just going to by an X2 chip.  I have done 3 mods with X2 chipes, and never had a single problem.  This seems much easyer, much less time consuming, and has much better support available.

yeah softmodding requires patience, some indepedancy and the ability to effectively filter out the good from bad guides. So it might indeed be better for you to not do it.

OK, I have no doubt that there are a lot of smart people frequenting this section of the forums.  I also have no doubt that Softmods are sweet.  However, there does not seem to be anyone offering any real advice, or even links to appropriate advice for my issue.

As it appears that I have overwritten importante parts (fatx partition table) of my original Xbox hard drive, is there any way to recover and do a soft mod?

no he was right, your drive was locked. which means you are not hotswapping correctly..

you can kill your hd easily if you are not careful.

overwrote parts of the fatx huh?  .. well if you made a good xboxhd disk with a UXE mod on it, you can build the drive from scratch, and it will repartition and format the hd correctly.

hotswapping isnt for everyone, and my guide is just that a guide, the ways i have shared, work for me, and countless others, but everyones xbox is different, some state v1.6 boxs need more motivation to hotswap, i cannot verify this directly.

My box is a 1.1, so I think that should be "easy".

Now Xboxhd stated that the drive was unlocked, but you believe that it was still locked?  I guess that could be.  I will try again the next night that I have some time.  I built the xboxhd disk as per your guide, so it should be correct.  Is there anyway (from the linux promt) to verify if it is built correctly?

Option 1 (using xboxhd) is to rebuild from scratch corect?

Anyone know how to tell if your XboxHDM disk has everything it needs?

Also, doing the hotswap on the original Xbox harddrive, I don't need the EEPROM info, even if it has to be rebuilt from scratch?

Thanks.  maybe the jumpers set to "Master" is the key.  I am going to try again with your latest advice.

How long should it take to do the build from scratch option?  It seems to be taking a long time!

i was away over the weekend, so I let it run all weekend.  It was still stuck on this screen all weekend

Building an Xbox HD from scratch is a two step
procedure.  First the partition table is buit
Then the partitions are formated.
We will now search /dev/hda for an xbox partitoin table..

No xbox-partition table found on /dev/hda

Drive is not locked but locking is enabled
Don't reboot until you have build a working xbox HDD
since rebooting will relock the drive.
Press any key to abort the operation.

Is my XboxHDM disk hooched?
